[Smith's 'Certificate of Employment during the War' and 'Unit Register Card' state he was Chauffeur from 24 December 1914 until demobilization, attached GHQ C-in-C's personal staff. The personal reference from Haig's ADC states Smith "was employed from July 1915 until January 1919 ... on the Commander in Chief's Personal Staff both under Lord French and Sir Douglas Haig. He has always been employed on Sir Douglas's cars]
