Harold KNIGHT.Study for 'The Letter'Oil on panel28.5x23.5cmNote: This is a small study for a very large work (162.6 x 129.5 cms) that was exhibited in 1909 and is now in the collections of Leeds Museums & Art Galleries. The likely model is Phyllis Gotch, the daughter of fellow artists, Caroline and Thomas Cooper Gotch. She is wearing one of Laura Knights dresses, which appears in several paintings of the period. Harold painted Phyllis wearing this blue silk dress on at least two occasions - the other entitled The Reader, shows her posing en plein air, also reading a letter.Provenance: From the Estate of Robert Morson & Eleanor HughesThis delightful oil sketch appears to be in original unrestored condition. We suspect it would benefit from a clean. The frame dates from circa 1980s and the back of the substrate board is inscribed J O PHughes presumably by a framer.
