There is a very faint, small, white blemish to the right of the sitter's chin but this is hardly noticeable and not clear whether it is in fact part of the original design. Otherwise the work appears to be in good original condition. Unexamined out of glazed frame. The mount with some tarnish and general wear commensurate with age. The glaze with one or two scratches. Y Samuel Cotes (British 1734-1818) A young woman, wearing purple satin dress with white lace trim, lace choker, her hair upswept Watercolour on ivory, oval Signed with initials and dated 1757 (lower right) 3cm (1 in.) high Within a foil backed garnet border and a blue and white enamelled gold frame Provenance: Sale, Sotheby's, Amsterdam, Furniture, Sculpture and Works of Art, 15 December 1994, lot 212 (sold as Samuel Coates [sic]) Condition Report: Some very light spots of surface dirt throughout, and a more concentrated area of surface dirt to the lower framing edge, which has caused some discolouration, although this looks superficial. There are very small gaps between the edge of the miniature and the mount to the side (approx. 2mm), possibly caused by some very slight bowing but this is barely noticeable. Unexamined out of glazed frame. One or two of the surrounding garnets with some damage or loss, but this is very slight and visible in the online illustration. Several small flakes of paint loss throughout, but largely confined to the extreme edges. Y Attributed to Andrew Plimer (British 1763-1837) A lady, wearing white dress and fichu, her hair powdered Watercolour on ivory, oval 7cm (2¾ in.) high In a gilt metal mount, the reverse glazed to reveal a lock of hair on a white glass background Condition Report: There are several spots of what appears to be a light brown substance to the sitter's fichu, and a small strand of very fine black hair/fibre has become attached to one of the spots - it is likely this could be removed with a soft brush. There is a slight discrepancy to the pigmentation in the sitter's face but this is very subtle and not clear whether this was the artist's intention rather than later restoration. Some very slight bowing to the ivory sheet. Girl: Some light surface dirt throughout. The miniature has slipped in the mount a little but there is no obvious bowing. There is a small white blemish to the left of the sitter's right shoulder but this looks like it might have been part of the artist's original intention. Unexamined out of glazed frame. Some very light discolouration to areas of the background, together with some light surface dirt and scratching. The miniature has slipped in the frame slightly and there is a very slight hint that the ivory is starting to bow. Unexamined out of glazed frame. Hope Springs: Some discolouration to the green pigment in the trees which has now turned brown. Some of the applied detail to the forest floor has been lost at the extreme edge but this is barely noticeable. There are also traces of associated glue residue, but this will have been present since the works conception. There is no crack to this miniature, and therefore this is on a separate ivory sheet to the portrait to the obverse. The miniature has slipped in the frame slightly. Unexamined out of glazed frame. Some light spots of white surface mould but this should be easily removed by a soft brush. Some light rubbing to the framing edge, and the lower left edge also with an area of minimal possible retouching. Light surface dirt throughout, most of which is concentrated at the framing edges. Unexamined out of glazed frame. The mount with heavy surface scratching verso. Some light surface dirt, and fine craquelure throughout. There are some small areas of flaking/associate loss to the red pigment around the sitter's outer hairline. Some light undulation to the vellum predominantly to the lower right corner. The enamel later applied to the reverse flaking to the edges with some associated losses. Unexamined out of glazed frame. Surface dirt lightly scattered throughout and largely concentrated to the framing edges. The reverse of the ivory sheet with a small patch of glue residue (approx. 3mm). The hair backing with some loss and a large patch of glue residue visible. The miniature and hair backing have come away from the mount and the lot is in 4 pieces (front and back of mount, hair detail backing, and ivory miniature). Will need re-framing. She married Sir Nathaniel William Wraxall, 1st Baronet on 30 March 1789. Condition Report: Some very light surface dirt/mould which should be easily removed with a soft brush. Light surface scratches throughout. Some loss to the paint at the extreme edges, and this is most heavy to the lower left edge. Small area of possible retouching to the sky left of the man's head. The miniature as been laid down to the card backing. The mount with some nicks to the corners and general wear throughout commensurate with age, would benefit from being re-glazed. Undulation to the sheet and surface scratches throughout with two stronger scratches vertically to the sitter's head (approx. 1.5cm) and horizontally to the sitter's left breast (approx. 1.5cm).
