US, died 1820, London. After studying painting in Philadelphia, he established himself as a portrait painter in New York City. Sailing to Italy in 1760 he toured the historical sites of Europe settling in London in 1763. The patronage of George III freed him of the need to paint portraits for a living, and he became known for historical, religious, and mythological subjects. His depiction of the Death of General Wolfe (1771) stirred controversy for the modern dress rather than the robes expected in a history painting. He was the second president of the Royal Academy, serving from 1792 to 1805 and 1806 to 1820. (LP)
