William Hoare of Bath RA (c.1707-1792)Portrait of Mrs Mary Canning (née Petre), half-length, in a white dress and blue wrap; and Portrait of Francis Canning, her husband, half-length, in a plum-coloured coat and gold embroidered waistcoata pair, pastel, circa 174559 x 43cm, in the original carved giltwood frames (2)Provenance: Foxcote House, Ilmington, Warwickshire.Literature: 'Foxcote, The Story of an Estate', Margaret Fisher and Pearl Mitchell. The Catholic family of Canning owned Foxcote in Warwickshire from the 15th century and the house was rebuilt in the early 18th century, probably to the designs of Edward Woodward. William Hoare executed this pair of portraits in the mid-1740s when the sitters were staying in Bath. They share a close similarity with the pair of portraits tentatively identified as William Ffolkes and his wife that now belong to the Bath Preservation Trust at No.1 the Crescent, Bath.Foxcote is at the centre of one of the most impressive and elegant of Cotswold estates, the home to ten generations of the Canning family until the death of Robert Canning in 1848. In the 1960s the estate was purchased by Christopher Boot Holman, heir to Boots the Chemist.Condition report: Mary Canning: Surface dust and dirt and possibly a little light browning to the paper. A rubbed horizontal line across the top of the work level with the top of the head, probably from mount. Not seen outside of frame.

Lot 572

Andrea Soldi (Italian, 1703-1771)Portrait of a lady of the Sherard family, circa 1745, head and shoulders, in a blue dress with pale blue ribbons and a green cloakoil on canvas, in a painted feigned oval76 x 63.5cm, unframedProvenance: The Earls of Harborough, Stapleford, Leicestershire, and by descent;Horton Lodge, Windsor, Berkshire.John Ingamells attributed this portrait to Soldi during his Directorship of the Wallace Collection (1977–92). Stylistically the portrait is very similar to a portrait of Lady Graham (d.1763) signed and dated 1743 (John Ingamells, ‘Andrea Soldi—a check-list of his work’, 'Walpole Society', XLVII, 1978–80, p. 10, cat. no. 33, pl. 2d). Philip Sherard, 2nd Earl of Harborough (d.1758) was painted at three-quarter length by Soldi at about the same time and this supports the suggestion that the sitter was perhaps his wife, Anne Pedley (Ingamells 1978–80, p. 11, cat. no. 35A, pl. 3b).Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The picture is in plane and the paint layers are in a good condition overall. The varnish is even but matte and yellowed. There is a layer of surface dirt present. There is a surface scratch to the left of the sitter's face, approx. 4in in length.

The sitter's face appears to have suffered damage and loss in the past with large areas of fill and retouching. Other areas of overpaint are present in the background and sitter's chest and are fairly well matched to the original. The varnish is glossy, clear and even with a layer of dust across the surface. The frame is in a good condition.

Lot 517

William Hoare of Bath RA (c.1707-1792)Portrait of a lady, half-length, in a cream and gold dresspastel, circa 175060 x 46cm, in a carved giltwood Kent frame with shell and foliate dropsProvenance: Horton Lodge, Windsor, Berkshire. This portrait is stylistically and compositionally very similar to Hoare’s portrait of Mrs Richard Plowden in the Indianapolis Museum of Art.Condition report: A very large water stain across bust and neck. A small water stain close on sleeve at lower edge. This is some discolouration, especially in top left quarter and along top edge. Some surface dirt throughout, especially so in corners and edges. Top left corner is a little torn at extreme edge, some canvas can be seen underneath, so it is likely that this is stuck down. Not seen outside of frame.

Lot 804

An Elizabeth II RAF dress sword, scabbard and ribbon, with a gilt brass guard bearing the RAF insignia, 110cm longThe property of Wing Commander Leonard Fitch Ratcliff, DSO, DFC and Bar, Croix de Guerre Alec Palme and Lêgion d'honneur. During WWII, Wing Commander Ratcliff flew night-time bombing raids over Germany where Allied casualty rates were astonishingly and tragically high. He then transferred to the 161 Special Duties' Squadron, responsible for dropping secret agents and equipment into Nazi-occupied Europe under cover of darkness, to aid resistance movements across the Continent. The total strength of 161 Squadron was about 200; during its wartime activities casualties amounted to 600. In other words, the whole Squadron was wiped out entirely three times - an extraordinary price to pay.Ratcliff took part in a remarkable 70 moonlight missions, flying Halifax Havocs, Hudsons and Lysanders. Most famously, he dropped Yvonne Cormeau, codename 'Annette', whose work with the French Resistance was immortalised in Sebastian Faulks' best-selling book 'Charlotte Grey' and the subsequent film.Yvonne Cormeau (1909-1997) was an agent and wireless operator for the Special Operations Executive (SOE) and a wireless operator for the 'Wheelwright' network led by George Starr in South-West France from August 1943 until the liberation of France in September 1944. She was acclaimed for the quality of her transmissions and cryptography. She survived an extraordinary length of time working behind enemy lines - wireless operators were especially vulnerable to detection and capture. She was awarded an OBE from the UK and the Lêgion d'honneur and Croix de Guerre from France, as well as later being immortalised in print and film.
