By repute, Captain Martin is riding a winner of the Cesarewitch Handicap. The winners are seldom if ever bred from, so instead the horse became a hunter, and presumably has been given to Captain Martin, who may have been a part owner. Captain Martin’s dress and bearing indicate that he is probably an ex-cavalry officer. The Cesarewitch Handicap is a flat race for horses aged three years or older. It is run at Newmarket over a distance of 2 miles and 2 furlongs (3,621 metres) and finishes on the Rowley Mile. It takes place each year in October.
