*Kennedy (Jacqueline Bouvier, 1929-1994). President John F. Kennedy and children John Junior and Caroline, circa 1962, original gouache painting heightened with silver and gold pen, showing the President and children in Indian dress with turbans, J.F. Kennedy at the front dragging a dead tiger by its tail, the children on white and black horses following on behind, painted on a silver ground on blue card, 14 x 26 cm, mounted on plain card, framed and glazed Provenance: The family of Maud Shaw, the White House nanny to the Kennedys, and by family descent. It is understood to have been painted by Jackie Kennedy after her visit as First Lady to India and Pakistan with her sister Lee in March 1962. Maud Shaw used to explain it as a metaphor of John F. Kennedy bringing home the family bacon. A watercolour by Jackie Kennedy titled 'The White House Long Ago' painted at a similar time, and showing similar artistic style, was given to her husband as a gift. The President chose to hang this painting in his Oval Office at the White House, and now is held in the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum at Columbia Point, Boston. Jackie Kennedy also painted watercolours to be used as original designs for Christmas cards in 1963 which were used commercially by Hallmark, the originals now held by the Smithsonian Institution. A rare item of Kennedy memorabilia at auction. See Mary Evans Seeley, 'Season's Greetings from the White House: The Collection of Presidential Christmas Cards', 1996. (1)
