Comprising twelve sections, the top row with three Evangelists, each holding a gospel; the next row with the Annunciation scene with Archangel Gabriel, Mary and Saint Paul holding a raised sword and a book; Saint Augustine and Saint Thomas Aquinas flanking the standing figure of Jesus; the bottom row with Saint Peter holding keys and a book, Moses and probably Saint Andrew; each figure framed with embroidered foliage; sewn to a linen background stretched over a wooden frame. The dalmatic (liturgical vestment derived from the Late Roman garment with the same name) was worn by the deacons in Latin Catholic Church. This dress, mainly used in the Holy Liturgy, was often decorated in silk and gold embroidery, and splendid specimens were realised by the Italian workshops of the Florentine Republic, one of the richest Italian states of the Renaissance. 10th-12th century A.D. Each composed of a decoratively twisted upper hoop, bulbous collars and a large central bulb with projecting cones and granules. From the collection of a North American gentleman, formed in the 1990s. This style of earring was typical among Slavic women in the 8th-12th centuries, an imitation of Eastern Roman models. Examples have been found in Poland, Czech Republic, and Slovakia, and with similar decoration in Belarus. Such rings were also worn as part of head-dresses, in which context they are known as ‘temple rings’ because they were worn by women near the temples. They were usually made of base metals, but some silver and gold examples also survive. Different tribes had their own designs, which were often threaded onto a cord, forming part of a head-dress, or woven directly into braids of hair. Two oval brooches on the upper chest represent the pinafore dress worn by the Viking women, decorated with zoomorphic or geometric ornaments. In the Gnezdovo Hoard, 46 beads of sheet silver, most with granulation of Slav character, others with filigree, were part of one of the greatest Viking treasure found in the East. The jewellery, most of Scandinavian or Slav character, show the great mix of style and decoration which ornamented the dress and the garments of the Vikings in the East. A Naval Captains full-dress jacket and waistcoat, the wool and linen jacket with brass buttons, lace cuffs and heavy gold braid, the waistcoat with matching buttons and trim, this design first introduced in 1767, together with an Ede, Son & Ravenscroft cardboard box/Provenance: Cecil George Savile Foljambe (1846-1907), ennobled firstly as Baron Hawkesbury, subsequently as Viscount Hawkesbury and finally as the Earl of Liverpool. He was a midshipman aboard HMS Curacoa, then an MP and served for a considerable number of years in Queen Victoria's Household, eventually becoming Lord Steward.
