A fine patinated bronze and white marble mounted souvenir model of the Vendome Column, probably circa 1810, the column cast with figural friezes and mounted with a togate model of Napoleon, descending to a stepped square section base with metal fence to the outer rim, 48cm high, the base 21cm square The present model likely dates from before 1814, when the statue of the togate Napoleon was taken down from the column at Place Vendome in favour of a model of the Emperor in military dress. In the 1860s, this was again replaced with a togate statue which is still present today. However, in the later statue, Napoleon is portrayed holding a sceptre, whereas in the present lot he is portrayed leaning on a sword or baton, as was the case in the original statue that crowned the Vendome column when it had just been erected.
