Polychrome rectangular icon on panel, on the subject of the Assumption of Mary: the mother of Christ escorted by the four archangels, surrounded by devout characters, points her hand towards the sky where her son awaits her. One of the archangels presents a sheet, probably a reminder of the shroud of Jesus. Popular subject of devotion from northern Greece, mid-twentieth century and probably 1950, year when the Assumption was defined as a dogma by Pius XII. While sharing the same faith in the Assumption, the Orthodox Church has never wanted to define Dormition in dogmatic terms. Fair condition despite a necessary restoration in the dress of the virgin. Dimensions 22 x 17 cm.
