WW2 Royal Air Force Observers Service Dress Tunic Attributed to T L W Alters MC, fine officers four pocket service dress tunic having padded Observers brevet wing above medal ribbons for the Military Cross (MC), British War medal, Victory medal, Indian General Service medal and 1939-45 Defence medal. Brass kings crown tunic buttons and rank lace to the cuff for Wing Commander. Gieves tailors label to the inside pocket which has typed name “T L W ALTERS”. Tunic remains in good condition overall.

WW2 Royal Air Force Service Dress Uniform Attributed to Pathfinder Squadron Leader The Hon Brian Grimston DFC, Killed in Action 4th April 1943 Serving with 156 Squadron, four pocket officers service dress tunic with padded embroidered kings crown RAF pilots wing above Distinguished Flying Cross medal ribbon and gilt metal pathfinders badge. To the cuffs is rank insignia for Squadron Leader. Brass kings crown RAF buttons to the front and pockets. Interior pocket of the tunic has original tailors label with inked name, “Hon B Grimston” and dated 1940. Accompanied by matching service dress trousers. The set shows service wear and has some damage to the interior lining by the armpit. Son of James Walter Grimston fourth Earl of Verulam. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on 5th January 1943, the citation was as follows, “Squadron Leader the Honourable Brian Grimston (84667) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, No 156 Squadron. Squadron Leader Grimston captain of an aircraft engaged in operations against Turin on the night of 11th December 1942. Throughout the greater part of the outward flight, he was forced to fly blind, owing to extremely adverse weather. Only by exercise of the greatest coolness and tenacity was this officer able to surmount the difficulties of the Alpine crossing, reach the target and complete his mission. On the return flight, the state of the weather exacted the most superlative airmanship and navigational skill. Squadron Leader Grimston finally made a successful landing in this country. In the course of numerous operational sorties, this officer has evinced superb skill and exceptional courage.” On the 4th April 1943 he was sent on a mission to Kiel, as part of a force of 10 pathfinder aircraft from 156 squadron, his and another aircraft failed to return. He was lost with all of his crew. His brother was also killed in WW2 serving with the RAF.

White metal tunic buttons with woven Royal Observer Corps breast badge above medal ribbons for France & Germany star, Defence medal and 1939-45 war medal. To each arm is printed rank insignia for Chief Observer. Interior of the tunic has 1942 dated size label. Accompanied by the matching 1942 dated battle dress trousers. Set remains in very good overall condition. The seaborne titles were worn by members of the Royal Observer Corps who accompanied the invasion fleet for operation overlord (D-Day).

Attached to the guard is a later applied officers dress portepee. Imperial crowned anchor to the centre of the cartouche. Blade with remains of etched decoration and makers details. Fuller to the back edge running three quarter length of the blade. The blade measures 80cms, overall 95 ½ cms. No scabbard.

Interior has the original leather sweatband liner, which has some cracks and wear.

Victorian 17th (Duke of Cambridge’s Own) Lancers Officers Full Dress Uniform, fine example of the dark blue melton cloth body with white collar, cuffs and plastron front. Tunic collar with gold wire braid decoration, cuffs with heavy bullion embroidery and knotted officers shoulder boards with rank pips attached. Regimental pattern officers buttons with skull and cross bones to centre. Officers quilted cloth lining to the interior. Accompanied by the full dress pattern trousers with two central white strips to the legs. Full dress cross belt with hallmarked silver fittings (Bent & Parker, Birmingham, 1884), pouch with gilt metal VR crowned cipher to the centre and central white stripe to the cross belt. Officers waist belt sash with crimson backing and full dress bullion aiguillettes. One rank pip detached from shoulder board but otherwise the set remains in very good overall condition.

2nd Lieutenants Full Dress Uniform of 16th (Queens Own) Lancers, good example of scarlet melton cloth with dark navy blue collar, cuffs and plastron front. Officers knotted shoulder boards. Post 1902 pattern regimental buttons with Imperial crown. Fine quality quilted lining to the interior of the tunic, some shredding and wear to the interior collar area. Accompanied by a matching pair of full dress trousers with two yellow strips to the leg. Interior of the trousers have tailors label with inked name “A D R Wingfield Esq”. Set is also complete with waist sash, full dress aiguillettes and officers hallmarked silver cross belt and pouch. The pouch is a Victorian example with hallmarks for Bent & Parker, Birmingham 1879. The quality of the tunic would indicate it to be of Victorian period so possibly the buttons were changed after the coronation of Edward VII. Good untouched set.

White metal collar badges and single T/Y/MONTGOMERYSHIRE shoulder title. White metal regimental buttons to the front, shoulders and rear skirt. Blanket lined interior with much of the paper tailors label attached. Accompanied by a pair of dark blue dress trousers with large central red stripe to leg. Small area of cloth missing from the bottom of the tunic but still displays well.

Imperial German Regiment Garde du Korps NCO’s Peaked Dress Cap in Tailors Storage Box, interesting example of the dress cap, red central cloth body and white top with red piping to the crown. Other ranks pattern Prussian state and national cockades. Short pattern peak. Interior complete with sweatband and blue cloth lining. The cap is housed in cardboard storage box with details of Mutzen Fabrik Ludwig Schluckebier Unna. Small area of damage to the box lid and the cap shows service wear in keeping with its age.

Housed in black anodised scabbard with nickel mounts, scabbard mounts slight discolouration from grip mounts. Single leather short hanger attached to the scabbard. Near mint condition double edged blade with etched motto “Meine Ehre heist Treue”. Much of the original polish and cross graining remains to the blade. Reverse of the blade has cross keys makers trade mark of F Herder A.S Solingen. Blade measures 22cms, overall 37cms.

Third Reich SS Enlisted Mans Dress Dagger with Vertical Hanger by Carl Eickhorn, fine example having ebony grip with eagle and enamel SS emblem inserted. Nickel silver grip mounts with the reverse of the cross guard being stamped “II”. Housed in its original scabbard with mounts. Attached to the scabbard is a black leather vertical hanger, with the top clip being stamped RZM M5/71 and OLC in diamond. The double edged blade remains in very good condition with much of the original finish remaining. Etched with motto “Meine Ehre heist Treue”. Reverse side has Carl Eickhorn Solingen makers trade mark. Blade measures 21 ½ cms, overall 37 ½ cms.

Third Reich SS Officers Chained Dress Dagger, fine example of a 1936 pattern SS officers dress dagger having black ebony grip with eagle and early copper based enamel SS runes inserted. Un-marked top and lower grip mounts. Scabbard having hanging chains with SS runes acceptance stamp to the reverse. Attached to the grip is a replaced officers dress portepee. Near mint condition blade which retains much of the original polish and cross graining. Correct un-maker marked blade. Etched motto “Meine Ehre heist Treue”. Some small dents to the lower scabbard mount but generally a very good example of an SS officers dress dagger.

1st Model German Naval Officers Dress Dagger and Award Grouping Attributed to Vice Admiral (Vizeadmiral) Ernst (Friedrich Robert) Scheurlen, who was Killed on 8th April 1945, grouping consisting of a 1st model German naval officers dress dagger with flame pommel top, white celluloid grip retaining the wire binding, cross guard with press button release and dress portepee attached. Housed in its original deluxe pattern hammered scabbard with the original naval short and long hangers attached. Blade by Horster with sailing ship etched blade. The blade and fittings appear to be in very good condition. Accompanied by a post war blued blade presentation naval dagger in the form of the 2nd pattern Kriegsmarine Officers dagger, this example is also housed in a hammered scabbard. The daggers are mounted with his original awards from both WW1 and WW2, these consist of Imperial Iron Cross 1st class, Imperial Iron Cross 2nd class, Wurttemberg Friedrich Order 2nd class medal with swords, German Cross in gold (Deutsche Kreuz), Bar to the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd class, War Service Cross 1st class with swords, Coastal Artillery war badge, Krim campaign shield, 1914-18 Honour Cross, Austro Hungarian WW1 service medal, Bulgarian service medal and various miniature stick pin awards. Also mounted with the items is a Kriegsmarine officers breast eagle and studio portrait of Scheurlen in full uniform. Typed signed letter from his wife, Frau Else Scheurlen, accompanies the grouping. The set is all mounted into a large glass display frame. The frame measures 68 x 82 ½ cms. Vice Admiral Scheurlen was born in Strasbourg on 5th December 1892. He served during WW1 but rose through to Vice Admiral in the German Kriegsmarine becoming commander of the Naval forces in Southern France, he was commander when the allied forces launched Operation Dragoon. He was moved back to Germany and his last command was that of the 2nd Marine Division in February 1945. The division fought against the British forces on the Western Front in Germany and he was killed in action on the 8th April 1945. Please note C&T Auctioneers and Valuers Ltd, have not been able to remove items from the frame to inspect, but all appear to be as we have stated. Sold on this basis.

Eagle pommel top with swastika to the centre, white celluloid grip retaining the original wire binding, standard pattern cross guard with press button release to the reverse. Dagger is housed in the original scabbard with deluxe pattern roped hanging ring attachments. Double edged blade etched with fouled anchor and foliage. Blade has makers trade mark to the base of the blade. Much of the original polished finish remains to the blade. The blade measures 25cms, overall 41cms.

White celluloid grip retaining the wire binding, gilt metal eagle top pommel with swastika to the centre, cross guard with fouled anchor to the centre cartouche and press button release on the reverse. Complete with the original deluxe pattern hammered scabbard with two plain hanging rings. Plain double edged blade with two central fullers. Late war WKC letter trade mark to the base. The blade measures 25cms, overall 42cms. Generally good example of a late war naval officers dagger.

Scarce Third Reich Naval Officers Deluxe Pattern Dress Dagger by WKC, fine deep orange celluloid grip retaining the original wire binding. Gilt metal eagle pommel with swastika to the centre. Cross guard with fouled anchor to the cartouche and press button release on the reverse. Attached to the grip is an original naval officers bullion dress portepee. Dagger is housed in a deluxe pattern scabbard with fine relief of oak leaves and acorns. The hanging rings are also with oak leaves relief. Standard etched blade with central double fuller and WKC knights helmet trade mark to the base. The blade measures 25cms, overall 42cms. Generally a good example of a scarce variation German naval dagger.

Scarce Unit Marked Luftwaffe Officers Dress Sword by SMF Solingen, fine example of an aluminium mounts officers dress sword with much of the gilt wash finish remaining to the mobile swastika in the top pommel and on the cross guard. Underside of the cross guard is engraved with unit details “1.FL. KP. Nr 26”Blue leather covered grip retaining the original aluminium wire binding. Blue leather covered scabbard with aluminium top and lower mounts. Attached to the rear of the scabbard is the original blue leather half moon hanger with aluminium fitting. Fine double edged plain blade with central fuller. SMF Solingen makers trade mark to the base of the blade. Some light surface staining to the blade but generally good condition. The blade measures 71 ½ cms, overall 92 ¼ cms. Unit markings also engrave to the top of the scabbard throat mount.

Luftwaffe Miniature Dress Sword by Alcoso Solingen, fine example of the miniature dress sword mounted onto propeller mount base. The miniature sword is produced in the same way as the full size version. Blue leather covering to the grip and scabbard. Blade with Alcoso Solingen makers trademark. Remains in very good overall condition. Blade measures 15 ¾ cms, overall 26 ¼ cms. Base measures 19 ¾ cms x 3 ¾ cms.
