Educated at Osborne and Dartmouth, he was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1914. He saw action at the Battle of Jutland as a midshipman in HMS Southampton and was seconded to the Royal Naval Air Service in January 1918 and subsequently the Royal Air Force, in which he achieved the temporary rank of flight lieutenant. He returned to the Navy in December 1918 and was seconded to Naval Intelligence from October 1920 until leaving the Navy in November 1923, during which time he appears to have been engaged in a certain amount of clandestine work. He joined the Special Constabulary at the time of the General Strike in 1926, serving until at least 1952. The chronology of his life included in this lot indicates that he had ten near-death experiences in the first forty years of his life, yet he ultimately lived to the age of 95
