ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN ASTLEY (1724-1787)Portrait of a Lady, said to be Sarah Hamilton of Drumasple, Dungannon, Co. Tyronequarter-length, wearing a dark lace-trimmed dress and pearl necklaceoil on canvas25 1/4 x 20 3/4 in (64.2 x 52.8cm)The stretcher bears an inscription on an attached label 'Sarah Hamilton, only child of William Hamilton of Drumasple, married to Alexander Stuart...This portrait supposed by Ramsay of Edinburgh'The proposed attribution would appear to be supported on stylistic grounds by comparison with other portraits by Astley. cf. for instance a similarly posed Portrait of a Lady, sold at Sotheby's 21st Dec 1983 lot 21; and Portrait of Christina Ward of Capesthorne, in a private UK Collection.John Astley studied under Hudson, and was in Rome by 1749 where he was patronised by Sir Horace Mann, the British Minister in Florence. He returned to England in 1752, but lack of success encouraged him to move to Dublin, where he established a successful portrait practice. By all accounts Astley was a colourful character. Anthony Pasquin in his 'Authentic history of the Professors of Painting....' (1796) wrote of the artist that 'he thought that every advantage in civil society was compounded in women and wine: and acting up to this principle of bliss, he gave up his body to Euphrosyne, and his intellect to madness...' Astley returned to London in 1759, and after a judicious marriage to Lady Dunkinfield Daniel, a rich widow, he retired to Shropshire. He is said to have painted little thereafter.
