Lot 462

18th century AD. A bifolium with two paintings showing the meeting of Saint John Chrystostom with the empress Eudoxia, and Saint John sent to exile with two horsemen on reverse.Cf. for similar style of painting the double-sided diptych with Mary, her son, and Saint George, in the Walters Art Gallery, inv.36.5; cf. Heldman, M., Munro-Hay, C., Zion, the sacred art of Ethiopia, New Heaven-London, 1993, fig.121, p.254.37 grams total, 38.5 x 28.5cm each (15 1/4 x 11 1/4"). The manuscript was probably part of a Homiliary in honour of the Archangel Michael. Saint Michael's feast of 12 Genbot was usually shared with the commemoration of Saint John Chrysostom. The homily was accompanied by a miniature of the empress Eudoxia, dressed as an Ethiopian empress, meeting with Saint John and sending him to exile because he reproached her for her luxury dress and jewellery; a second miniature depicts the exile of the Saint. [No Reserve] Fine condition.

Lot 478

9th-10th century AD. A carved wooden staff head of a Mochica or Chimú ruler, in the form of a standing figure of a man with his hands clasped to his body, a satchel hung across his shoulders, his skirt-like dress slit at the knees, wearing a crown-like headdress, under a toothed and arcaded mandorla, the figure is decorated with circular, square and triangular pieces of haliotis inset on the crown, arcaded top and robes; mounted on a custom-made display stand.Cf. Jackson, M.A., ‘The Chimú Sculptures of Huacas Tacaynamo and El Dragon, Moche Valley, Perú' in Latin American Antiquity, vol. 15, no.3, September, 2004, pp.298-322, fig.13e.182 grams total, 32cm including stand (12 1/2"). Property of a French gentleman living in Paris; previously in a private Swiss collection, Basel; formerly with Sotheby's, London, UK, 1 December 1958, lot 155; accompanied by a copy of the relevant Sotheby's catalogue pages. The moche or mochica civilization grew and developed during the pre-Inca era, between the 1st and 8th centuries AD, in the long and narrow strip desert land of the northern coast of Peru. The terms moche and mochica are conventional and refer to the Rio Moche, a river that laps one of the monuments left by this ancient civilization, the Huaca del Sol, and to the Muchik, an ancient dialect spoken in La Libertad. The wooden sculpture found in the Mochica and Chimú civilizations one of its highest expressions. Deep in the enormous citadel of the great Chimú culture capital city of Chan Chan, the archaeologists, in 2018, uncovered a corridor containing nineteen mysterious black wooden statues. Some are wearing masks of clay, tucked into special alcoves that line the walls. This wooden sceptre was made for a heroic warrior or ruler. The Necur (mother of pearl) was used for his necklace and headgear. His headgear is made of a double-headed snake, or two snakes symbol of protection of the warrior. Fine condition.

Lot 86

1st century AD. A substantial gold ring with wide semi-circular hoop, expanding shoulders with a pair of openwork volute scrolls extending towards the oval bezel, the bezel with facing busts of Jupiter (Greek Zeus) as Serapis, and Juno (Greek Hera) as Isis, the goddess dressed in a himation fastened by a fibula; Egyptian crown and moon to the head (Juno Regina-Isis) respectively; a lion, two stars and the eagle of Jupiter over a globe between them.Cf. Spier, J., Ancient Gems and Finger rings, catalogue of the collections, the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, 1992, fig.466; for the discussion on the iconography of Jupiter Dolichenus and Juno Regina see Hörig, M. & Schwertheim, E., Corpus Cultus Iovis Dolicheni (CCID), Leiden, New York, København, Köln, 1987.15.11 grams, 25.84mm overall, 22.02mm internal diameter (approximate size British Y, USA 12, Europe 27.51, Japan 26) (1"). Property of a London gentleman; formerly in the Surain collection, since the 1980s; accompanied by an archaeological report by Dr Raffaele D’Amato and an independent specialist report and valuation by graduate gemmologist and jewellery expert Anna Rogers, GIA GG, BA, Gem-A, ref. no. 174323/24/03/2021; this lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by AIAD certificate number no.10639-174323.The ring belongs to the shape M of the Spier classification, and the iconography corresponds to the Roman sealings of East Hellenistic typology. The counterpart to the portrait of Jupiter Serapis is the depiction of Juno Regina Isis, the goddess usually represented on the left side and Jupiter on the right side. The eagle is the usual attribute of the god, who in other representations as Dolichenus is dressed in complete military dress and is usually standing over a bull and not a globe like in our ring. In the Roman religion, Jupiter was obviously identified with Jupiter Optimus Maximus, the king of the gods. A video of this lot is available to view at TimeLine Auctions website. Very fine condition. A large wearable size.
