‘S’ in Reverse Field Roman Imperial Coinage, Arcadius (383-408), Siliqua, Trier, 392-5, d n arcadi-vs p f avg, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right, rev. virtvs ro-manorvm, Roma seated left on cuirass, holding reversed spear and Victoriola on globe, dress continues onto Roma’s right arm, s in right field, tr ps in exergue, 1.36g/6h (MC 44, this coin; Hoxne 615 [III/Bc]; RIC IX p.33, 106(b); RSC 27a). Edge a little ragged, otherwise good very fine, of curious style and with an unexpected mark in the reverse field £60-£80 --- Struck from the same dies as a specimen in the Fitzwilliam Museum (CM.5.3073-1933). In general terms the style of this coin is unusual; the r in arcadius is ill-formed (appearing closer to an n), while the depiction of Roma upon the reverse is somewhat crude. The appearance of distinct and deliberate mark in the reverse field adds to this anomalous character, although it is not immediately clear that the coin is irregular.
Obverse Legend Variant Roman Imperial Coinage, Arcadius (383-408), Siliqua, Trier, 392-5, d n arcapi-vs p f avg, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right, rev. virtvs ro-manorvm, Roma seated left on cuirass, holding reversed spear and Victoriola on globe, dress continues onto Roma’s right arm, tr ps in exergue, 1.65g/12h (MC 387, this coin; Hoxne 619 [Bc]; RIC IX p.33, 106(c); RSC 27a). Striking crack at 12 o’clock, clipped, very fine £80-£100 --- Guest, in his survey of the Hoxne treasure, notes that ‘siliquae of Arcadius were struck with two different obverse legends, one on which the D in Arcadius was engraved correctly, and another where the D looks like a letter P’ (2005, p.70). The Hoxne hoard contained similar quantities of both legend variants (with 360 coins employing the D, and 279 employing the P), suggesting that the latter were indeed a legitimate issue of the Trier mint.

Hairline striking crack at 1 o’clock and a little clipped, otherwise good very fine and rare £400-£500 --- The Hoxne Hoard contained 379 siliqua of Eugenius minted at Trier, as described by RIC 106d. These were further divided by Guest into six subtypes on account of the variations in reverse design common throughout Trier’s second Virtus Romanorvm series (Hoxne 624-32). Only eleven coins of Eugenius with a reverse adhering to variety Ac were included within the Hoxne hoard, indicating that this particular variant was produced on a limited scale. The Vale of Pewsey Hoard, sold through these rooms in 2022, contained four such specimens [lots 121-4].
