19th Century dress sabre with single edge fullered blade and wire bound hilt, probably French, together with a Continental hunting sword or hanger with white and yellow metal grip, decorated with birds, animals and flowers, the double edged blade stamped: 1747. (2)(B.P. 24% incl. VAT) CONDITION REPORT: Hanger - hilt has been overpolished with abrasive. Slightly mis-sharpened. Dirty in places. Blade is badly pitted and tarnished with surface rust and edgek nicks. Sabre- blade is rusted in places, badly tarnished and knicked to its edge. Hilt is tarnished and worn but not damaged.
A Ludwigsburg figure of a Chinese woman, c.1767, modelled by Joseph Weinmüller, seated on a tasselled patterned cushion, her left foot resting on a shallower green cushion, her right hand raised, wearing a cap applied with delicate beads, a blue-sprigged dress and a pink tunic, decorator's mark in iron red, good restoration to her right foot, 18cm high. A pearlware bust of John Wesley, 1st half 19th century, modelled in his later years wearing ministerial dress, raised on a square base edged in green and yellow, and four Staffordshire figures of Wesley, two in pulpits above clock dials, two standing and reading from a prayer book, some chipping, 28.5cm max. (5) Provenance: from the collection of the late Reverend John J Perry.
A rare Derby biscuit porcelain figure of a female musician, c.1780, wearing Classical dress and playing a tabor suspended from her left hand, standing before a short column on a circular base applied with flowers, incised crowned crossed batons mark and N392, some restoration and chipping to her fingers, 26cm. Cf. Peter Bradshaw, Derby Porcelain Figures, p.395 which lists no.392 as an unknown pair of large figures.
A rare female Snuff Taker Toby jug, c.1830, wearing a blue dress with a pink apron, holding a circular snuff box and raising a pinch to her nostril, a small filled chip to the rim, 23.7cm. Female snuff-takers are more commonly seen in the Portobello type, such as the example sold at these salerooms on 25th February 2014, lot 438.
1st-2nd century AD. A bronze dress pin with tapering shank, ribbed upper section with linear detailing, finial a female head with hair drawn up in a chignon. 13 grams, 16cm (6 1/4"). From the collection of an Essex gentleman; acquired on the UK art market in the 1990s.[No Reserve] Fine condition.
2nd-3rd century AD. A silver dress pin comprising a spike and square-section shank with six lateral loops, finial formed as a hand with a grape between thumb and forefinger; three short chains each with an ivy-leaf pendant. 18 grams, 15cm (6"). Property of a gentleman; acquired in the late 1960s-early 1970s. Fine condition.
15th century AD. A bronze ring brooch with flat-section pin, the hoop with two clasped-hands motifs to the rim, ribbed couch for the pin, linear detailing. See Egan, G. & Pritchard, F. 9th-7th century BC. A carnelian cylinder seal with antithetical scene consisting: in the centre, of a winged disc, symbol of the sun god Å amaÅ¡, with streamers above a stylised sacred tree, flanked by a god on the left and a worshipper on the right; the bearded warrior god, probably Ninurta, wearing a square, star-topped, horned head-dress, and a tiered, striated, open robe over a fringed kilt, with a sword at his waist and crossed star-tipped bow-cases on his back, stands facing right on a dais, with his left hand raised, and the other extended; over his head the crescent as the symbol of the moon God Sîn; the stylised tree is a palm with eight branches on a base with two crossed diagonals on either side, through whose intersections a horizontal line crosses the trunk, set on a dais of two horizontal lines; the beardless worshipper in a fringed robe stands facing left, points with his raised left hand and extends the other palm up; left over his head are the Pleiades, on the right a big star, the symbol of the goddess IÅ¡tar.; between the backs of the two worshippers stands the tasselled spade of the god Marduk on a dais of two lines; line borders top and bottom. 137 AD. Rome mint. Obv: AELIvS CAESAR legend with bare head right. Rev: TR POT COS II legend with S C in fields with Pannonia standing facing holding vexillum in right hand and dress in left, dividing PANNO - NIA across fields. RIC 1059; BMC 1921; Sear 3981.25.22 grams.[No Reserve] Near very fine. Scarce.
Late Period, 664-332 BC. A green-white glazed composition amulet of the lion-headed goddess Sekhmet, striding forwards, wearing a tight-fitting dress and a tripartite wig; suspension loop behind head. 6.44 grams, 53mm (2"). Property of a Sussex gentleman; formerly acquired from Ancient Art, London, UK. Fine condition.
129 BC. Rome mint. Obv: helmeted head of Roma in winged helmet right, rudimentary, six-pointed star behind head. Rev: rider in military dress, holding spear, galloping right; Macedonian helmet with goat horns in left field, Q PILIPVS / ROMA in two lines below. Crawford 259/1; Sydenham 477; Babelon Marcia 11; Sear 135.3.82 grams.[No Reserve] Good very fine.
6th century AD. A suite of dress items from a female grave with museum display backing and card, comprising: two applied saucer brooches, each gilt bronze with central knop and band of Style I decoration, catch and pin-lug to the reverse; two bronze openwork disc brooches, each with T-shaped voids and stamped triangle detailing, pin-lug and catch to the reverse; ten large and seventy-five small globular amber beads; six glass beads of globular and cylindrical types; the footplate from a bronze small-long brooch with pelta-shaped foot, catch to the reverse; two bronze rings, one with break; a bronze dress-pin with flattened and pierced finial; a pair of bronze tweezers with grooved outer faces. Reported to the Portable Antiquities Scheme under reference WAW-DB4534. 488 grams total including packaging, saucer brooches: 63mm each (2 1/2"). Found South Worcestershire, UK; in the 1980s. The presence of disc and saucer brooches in a single grave assemblage is not unprecedented, especially in some Anglian areas. The foot of the small-long brooch may have been an intrusion from a neighbouring burial, or possibly a curated item - a keepsake carried in a pouch, for example. Tweezers, pins and other items are a routine find in many female burials in the pre-Christian period. [101] Fine condition.
2nd millennium BC. A substantial discoid lapis lazuli head for a dress pin with incised guilloche to the rim, reserved kneeling figure to one face with right hand raised, braided hair, similar figure to the reverse with long flowing hair, bare-chested with patterned skirt; remains of bronze pin; mounted on a custom-made stand. 122 grams, 74mm including stand (3"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired London art market, 1970-1980. Fine condition. Rare.
Tang Dynasty, 618-907 AD. A ceramic figurine of a horse and female rider on a rectangular base; the horse advancing with one foreleg raised, tail extended; the rider in courtly dress with long sleeves covering the hands, piled hairstyle; hollow to the underside. 2.7 kg, 41cm (16 1/4"). Property of an American gentleman; acquired 1970s-1990s.[No Reserve] Finely modelled, repaired.
