ATTRIBUTED TO CHARLES JERVAS (C.1675-1739)Portrait of William Tighe of Rosanna, standing in a landscape wearing a white dress and with a favourite dogOil on canvas, 105 x 128cmIn a fine 18th Century carved giltwood frame, the sides with floral pendantsProvenance: Hamwood House, Dunboyne, Co. MeathThis charming portrait depicts William Tighe, b.1710/11 in a dress, as was the early Giorgian fashion for boys aged up to twelve years old. He became an MP and married Lady Mary Bligh in 1736. He led a charmed life, building the delightful house, Rosanna, in Co. Wicklow in 1740, holding undemanding jobs such as keeper of The Phoenix Park, maintaining a house in Dawson Street and winning £10,000 in the Lottery. His granddaughter Caroline Tighe married Charles Hamilton of Hamwood which is the likely explanation for the paintings presence in the Hamwood collection.
