CAMPBELL MALCOLM: (1885-1948) British Land & Water Speed Record Holder. T.L.S., M. Campbell, two pages, South Kensington, London, 6th January 1926, to M. Beachcroft ('Dear Bro. Beachcroft') on the attractive printed stationery of Malcolm Campbell Automobiles and featuring a small illustration of the Blue Bird. Campbell thanks his correspondent for their letters and refers to some notices of Lodge meetings having gone astray in the post ('…so many letters have been lost in the past that I have had to complain very seriously to the Postmaster General…') although adding that he is making arrangements to attend a Meeting on 13th January, 'and I shall be bringing my father-in-law, Major Whittall, with me. I presume that a dinner jacket will suffice - if not, will you kindly let me know whether evening dress means full dress.' In concluding Campbell states that he has not subscribed to any charity and proposes sending a cheque for £10 'for you to devote to any charity which you think most suitable, or would it be better to forward this amount to the Worshipful Master of the Old Uppingham Lodge.' In a holograph postscript, signed with his initials MC, Campbell writes, in full, 'My Father in law has just rung me up on the telephone & told me he has seen you today. I am afraid I am a very bad mason but I never seem to get a spare moment for anything: actually by the time I get home I have worked between 11 & 12 hours a day.' A few small staple and pin holes to the left corner of each page, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG
MONTEZ MARIA: (1912-1951) Dominican American Actress. Vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of Montez standing in a full length pose wearing a long white dress. Signed in dark fountain pen ink across a light area at the base of the image. Autographs of Montez are rare in any form as a result of her tragically early death at the age of 39. Some very slight corner creasing, otherwise VG
VREELAND DIANA: (1903-1989) American Fashion Editor & Columnist, associated with Harper's Bazaar and Vogue. T.L.S., Diana, one page, 4to, (New York), 18th April 1974, to Rosamond Bernier ('Peggy darling'), on the printed stationery of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Vreeland encloses some charming letters (no longer present) which she remarks should never have come to her, and continues 'The wonderful Mrs. Douglas, of Brunschwig & Fils - wonderful French cottons, etc. - has a new cotton taken from a dress in the Costume Institute. She is christening it 'Rosamond', because of her ecstatic enthusiasm for the lecture.' Together with an A.L.S., Diana, two pages, 8vo, Park Avenue, New York, n.d. ('Tuesday eve.'), to Peggy (Rosamond Bernier), in full, 'You are a superstar & well on your way to the "tippy tops" - I do so admire your achievement & looking so delicious as you do "it". So much love & congratulations.' Also including a further T.L.S. by a secretary on behalf of Vreeland, one page, 4to, (New York), 19th February 1987, to Rosamond Bernier, on the printed stationery of The Museum of Metropolitan Art, praising her correspondent for a piece that she has just finished reading.
