An 1827 pattern Royal Navy officers sword, named to a Victoria Cross winner, Rear Admiral, Claude Congreve Dobson (1885-1940).This is a fine quality and scarce Royal Navy dress sword by Gieve Ltd of Portsmouth.Gilt brass hilt has the usual locking folding guard and lions head pommel, plus the Kings crown and fouled anchor motif of George V Shagreen grip with wire twist binding.The blade has the etched detail of the Royal coat of arms, a fouled anchor and crown, and floral swags.The blade is hand engraved ‘C.C. Dobson VC’.The sword is complete with its gilt brass mounted leather scabbard, plus hanging straps and a Royal Navy leather belt and buckle.The belt would appear to be of earlier date, with the buckle having the Queen Victoria crown.There is also a bullion sword knot attached to the hilt.Rear Admiral Dobson (then a Commander) won his Victoria Cross on August 18th 1919, at Kronstadt, Russia.Size: blade length 79cm / total length in scabbard 96cm.Condition: the blade is clean and with good etched detail. Much of the original gilt finish to the hilt and metal scabbard mounts has worn away, and the brass base metal has patinated to a red/brown colour.The shagreen grip and wire binding is intact.The sword knot and, leather hanging straps and belt show much wear, but are intact.There appears to be several of the retaining pins that hold the metal scabbard mounts in place missing - but the mounts seems secure on the leather.Viewing is recommended.

Dressed in a period war time gown, likely parachute dress. Measures approx. 60cm.
