Sir John Watson Gordon (1790-1864). Oil on canvas. Portrait of Colonel James Russell of Woodsgate Sterlingshire in dress uniform of the 7th Hussars seated half-length. 89.5cm x 69.5cm Giltwood frame. Biographical notes: James Russell was born on 5th January 1783 and died on 24th December 1830. He married Mary Sterling of Kippendavie on 26th April 1808. Buried in Dunblane Cathedral.. The artist studied at the Edinburgh Academy and one of the young students influenced and encouraged by Sir Henry Raeburn.
