Fine and rare Lloyd's Patriotic Fund sword of 50 Guinea-type awarded to Lieutenant James Boxer of H.M.S. Antelope, presented in 1804. The ormolu hilt of classical inspiration - the quillons formed as fasces, the knuckle bow as the club of Hercules entwined by a serpent, the pommel as the skin of the Nemean lion, the grip of finely chequered ivory, the langets cast with Naval trophies, with original blue and gold bullion dress knot, with curved single edged fullered blade richly decorated and retaining approximately 95% of its blued and gilt decoration down its entire length and engraved with the 1801 - 1816 Royal Arms, figures of Britannia and Victory, Naval trophies of arms, crowned GR cipher and floral scrolls and the presentation inscription 'From the Patriotic Fund at Lloyds to Leiut. James Boxer of H.M.S. Antelope for his Gallant Conduct on the Capture of the Dutch armed Galliot Schrik by the boats of the Antelope and Magicienne in the night of the 23rd of March 1804 near Zeurick Zee. Complete with its ormolu scabbard retaining all its gilded finish, engraved with oak leaves on its back edge and decorated with cast and chased Naval trophies with classical medallions depicting Herculean Labours and inset polished shagreen panels and twin cabled suspension rings, the throat engraved 'R. Teed Sword Cutler, Lancaster Court, Strand'. Lieutenant, later Captain James Boxer R.N. was a Naval hero who fought gallantly for his country. He entered the Navy as a Captain's servant in 1794 and rose in rank until his retirement as Captain in 1846. Of his many battles, the action which precipitated the presentation of the 50 Guinea Lloyd's sword was as follows:- 'Attaining the rank of Lieutenant on 14 November 1800 - he next in 1801 accompanied the expedition to Egypt for his services throughout the whole campaign, as Commander of Tigre's Launch, was presented with the Turkish gold medal. Lieutenant Boxer transferred to the Antelope on 12 March 1803, bearing the broad pennant in the North Sea of his friend, Sir W. S. Smith. Subsequently, on 31.3.1804, led a division of boats, was wounded in a gallant and successful attack on a guard-vessel, the Schrik of 6 guns and 94 men which he captured'. Sold with research. Provenance: Purchased by Philip Southgate in July 1983 from Peter Dale Ltd. Pall Mall, London CONDITION REPORT Very good original condition overall retaining approx 95% of all gilding and bluing, some slight wear from scabbard lining on blade. Ivory of hilt dirty but complete- original sword knot is worn but complete. Tip of blade is slightly rounded

Fine early 19th century Irish presentation sword with gilt bronze hilt with helmet pommel and gilt and silvered stirrup guard with crowned GR cipher, twin langets with silver crowned Irish harp to one side and 9th (Norfolk Regiment) of Foot Hibernia badge to the other, original red and gold bullion dress knot - the gilt copper scabbard with scarlet leather inserts, engraved on locket 'A Tribute of affectionate respect from the Corporation of Drogheda to their Gallant Townsman John Ackland Esq. Captn of the 9th Foot for his meritorious services in the Peninsula, Oct. 10th 1817. Peter Van Hoorick Recorder' and 'J. Read & Sons Makers, 8 College Green, Dublin' - the curved fullered blade retaining much original blued, gilt and polished finish and engraved to the tip of the blade with crowned 1801 - 1816 Royal Arms, crowned GR, military trophies, Justice, Britannia and Soldiers, Angels, Order of St. Patrick and crowned Irish harps. Captain John Ackland 9th (Norfolk) Regiment of Foot, described in his own words his service on his 1829 Statement of Service for retired officers:- 'I was appointed and Ensign to the 9th Regiment of Foot in 1806 and served under Sir Arthur Wellesley Campaign of 1808 in Portugal and in that severe and trying campaign under Sir John Moore in Spain, that shortly after I served in the Expedition to Walcheren when my health was much impaired by the disastrous sickness which prevailed. That prior to my perfect recovery from this severe illness I again returned to the Peninsular under Lord Wellington where I remained actively engaged until severely wounded on the retreat from Burgos although I had been previously so at Salamanca. I was ordered to England for the recovery of my health from the wounds and on its being established I accompanied the 1st Battalion of the Regiment to America although not effective therein, on my return to Europe with the Regiment I was placed on half pay!' He received a pension of £100 per annum commencing 25th October 1813 (for loss of the use of a hand at Burgos, Villa Muriel 25th October 1812) and retired to Drogheda, Ireland, where he assumed the life of a country squire Provenance: Purchased by Philip Southgate in 1984 from Peter Dale Ltd. Pall Mall, London, who purchased it at Phillips Arms & Armour Auction 23rd February 1984 - lot 159. Sold with catalogue and letters of provenance

There were only three possible owners of this sword who held the post of Lord Lieutenant of Ireland during the reign of King Edward VII. The first - The Earl of Cadogan, was appointed in 1895, so probably had a Victorian sword, the second - The Earl of Dudley, succeeded him in 1902 and was in turn succeeded in 1905 by The Earl of Aberdeen (1870 - 1916), who held the post until 1915

Dennie', etched blade with crowned Royal cipher and scrolls, in steel scabbard.H. W. Dennie was an Ensign in the 41st Foot, joined 2nd West Indian Regiment and transferred as a Lieutenant to 28th Foot in 1842. Major H. W. Dennie - 28th (North Gloucestershire) Foot - served with the 28th Foot in the Crimea at the Siege of Sebastopol in the Winter of 1854 - 1855, where he received severe injuries from frostbite, which necessitated amputation of half the right foot and a great part of the left, in consequence of which he was placed on the retired full pay and with a pension of £150 per annum (medal and clasp and Turkish medal) - source - Harts Army list 1864
