A marriage dress, guj, from Thano Bula Khan, with heavily embroidered front and back, and with herbs sewn into the collar, (In-55), and a shift for marriage night, from Thano Bula Khan; open-fronted and heavily embroidered, slightly stained from virgin blood to the reverse, 90cm long (In-104). After marriage, the garment can then only be worn for seven days after the birth of a son. Included with this lot is a photograph of similar garments being made. Most of my journeys in Pakistan are described in The Afghan Amulet and The Golden Horde. These journeys were not easy. Sind is not a closed area, like Indus Kohistan in the north and Makran in the south, but it was only possible to go there with an armed guard. My friends, Sue and Malcolm Bannister were always a great help. Malcolm was chairman of PTC, a subsidiary of British American Tobacco, based in Karachi, and the company sold cigarettes throughout Pakistan, including in Thano Bula Khan, a Hindu enclave in Sind. The embroidered dresses from there are well known but they were traded through the bazaars in Karachi and no one had actually been there. Malcolm arranged for Sue and me to visit it, providing us with an armed guard and with his local rep to look after us. I was very privileged to be able to do this and also to have enjoyed Sue and Malcolm's hospitality, both when they lived in Karachi and later in Islamabad. They were a haven of showers, good food, gin and tonic and a proper bed.

A rare community singing sheet for the 1927 F.A. Cup semi-final Cardiff City v Reading played at Molineux, The tradition of community singing at the F.A. Cup final first took place in this year for the Arsenal v Cardiff City game at Wembley. Evidently, something of a dress rehearsal was organised at the Molineux semi-final. As this would have been a new experience for many spectators the songsheet was printed with four hints to singers: (1) The band will play the tune, or part of it, first, then you will get the signal to start from Mr. Casey, who will be up on his perch. (2) Don't forget to take that deep breath before you start. (3) Read the words, a line at a time and then look up to the Conductor to see how the tune is going along. (4) As before, like good footballers, play to the whistle.
