During WWII he volunteered for the Parachute Regiment and was deployed on Market Garden" trip jumping with the troops at Arnhem. An unexpectedly powerful German presence led to fierce fighting on the bridge. There were terrible casualties and he had to use many unorthodox methods to try to give the wounded a chance of survival. He ended his army career as a Brigadier"
