Dumas, Alexandre.- Giraud (Eugène Pierre François, 1806-1881) Portrait of the young Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870), pencil on cream wove paper, signed 'E. Giraud' in the lower right corner, sheet approx. 195 x 120 mm. (7 3/4 x 4 3/4 in), laid onto album leaf, with trimmed contemporary pen and ink inscription identifying the sitter, minor surface dirt, mounted but unframed, [circa 1835]Provenance:Originally from an album containing original drawings by French artists, including Isabey, Pierre Francois Eugene Giraud, Le Poitevin, and Auguste Caron. See lot 198⁂ The present caricature shows the young author in military dress, and bears a close similarity to the caricature by Pierre Luc Charles Ciceri, now held in Le Musée Carnavalet, Paris.
Extensive personal collection of RAF related ephemera belonging to Fl Lt W E J Bishop (150494) who belonged to the 11th EFTS, Perth, 49th Squadron, 194 Squadron and 77th Squadron. After training with the Canadian Air Force in America he took part in many distinguished missions including Operation Tonga dropping British Airborne forces on D-Day on 6th June 1944. This Lot includes personal photo album of training in America, photo album of personal snapshots in the Far East and Burma, extensive log books, training manuals for aircraft (Tiger Moth, Lincoln I and II, Spitfire 14 and 19, Chipmunk T10, Oxford I and II, Anson I, Harved 2D, Lancaster, Dakota IV, Dakota I and III and Wellington), to also include map calipers in case, quantity of RAF flight maps of America, Assam and South East Asia, paperwork - pay books and pay records and examination papers, also including his original British RAF Type C leather flying helmet with Mk III goggles and oxygen mask (worn but in fairly good condition), together with post-war RAF beret and Officer's service dress cap with bullion cap badge
^ Rare naval officer’s sword, late 18th century, shallow diamond section blade 32.7” etched with pre-1801 royal arms, crowned GR, and FOR MY COUNTRY & KING on a flat section on both sides, faint traces of blued and gilt decoration, gilt brass stirrup hilt, langets engraved with fouled anchors against a shell, knuckle bow engraved with fruiting oak, cushion-shaped pommel chiselled with acanthus, ivory grip with ‘cigar band’ moulded with Neptune and a naval trophy, retaining its bullion dress knot. Good condition, retaining nearly all its original gilding
^ Naval officer’s dress sword c.1812-1825, straight slender double edge blade 25.5” cut with a short central fuller and etched with foliage, gilt brass stirrup hilt knuckle bow chiselled with fruiting laurel, acanthus chiselled crosspiece with crowned fouled anchor on langets, lion’s head pommel, chequered ivory grip. Good condition, retaining nearly all its original gilding, blade worn with small patches of pitting to lower part
^ Naval officer’s dress sword c.1812-1825, hollow ground triangular section blade 29” etched with small trophies and a standing figure with feather head dress and retaining some original blued and gilt decoration, gilt brass stirrup hilt chiselled with foliage, crowned fouled anchors in relief, pommel chiselled as a lion couchant, gripstrap engraved with laurel and serpent, wire bound chequered ivory grip, in its scabbard with gilt brass mounts, locket signed Dudley, Grand Parade, Portsmo and engraved with a sea horse. Good condition, some age wear, leather refurbished, chape restored.
^ Rare and unusual Georgian Dragoon officer’s sword c.1785-1797, broad curved single edge blade 30.5” cut with a single broad fuller and etched Knubley No7 Charring Cross (faint), blued and etched with GR, martial trophy and foliate device (blueing mostly worn on one side), cut and polished steel hilt with 3 fixed bars each formed as stylised foliage centred on a facetted ‘button’ and each with a cut and polished dress knot ring, fluted cushion shaped pommel, reeded ivory grip with steel band. Good condition. Note: the hilt is based on the contemporary French folding ‘attack’ guard, which Knubley has chosen to construct with fixed bars. John Knubley, royal sword cutler, was active at this address from 1785 until his death in 1795; his wife continued the business until 1797.
^ Infantry officer’s sword spadroon with hallmarked silver mounts by Thomas Cullum, London, 1794, maker’s stamp TC, straight single edge blade 32.25” cut with a single fuller and etched with crowned GR and martial trophies, stirrup hilt of conventional form with side bar, ring for dress knot, cushion-shaped pommel, reeded ivory grip, retaining the top half of its leather scabbard with all the HM silver mounts including chape, locket engraved Cullum King’s Cutler Charring Crofs within a circle, twin hanging rings, oval button. Good condition, some age wear, bottom half of leather scabbard missing. Note: for details of the maker see London silver-hilted Swords, L Southwick, Royal Armouries 2001, p.84-5.
^ 1831 Pattern general officer’s sword of Major Richard Baker, First Portuguese Regiment of Queen’s Lancers, British Auxiliary Legion, regulation blade 30” etched with crowned WIVR, oak wreaths, crossed sword and baton, and A LINNEY, 23 Regent St London Warranted, regulation hilt with gilt brass mounts, 2 piece ivory grips, bullion dress knot (well worn), in its lacquered gilt brass regulation scabbard engraved ‘SWORD OF MAJOR RICHARD BAKER, FIRST REGIMENT OF LANCERS, BRITISH AUXULIARY LEGION, PORTUGAL AND SPAIN, 1833 TO 1837’. Fine condition. Note: sold with extensive research material. Amos Linney moved to 23 Regent St in 1834. Richard Baker born 1810, commissioned Lieut. 1st Portuguese Queen’s Lancers Nov.1832; entered Spanish Service as Capt. July 1835 in same regiment; promoted Major March 1837. Joined the New Zealand Company 1839, emigrated there, one of the first settlers in Wellington (Baker Street named after him), district magistrate, commanded local volunteer cavalry corps, watercolour painter, died 1854.
An Art Deco unmarked white metal onyx and diamond dress set, comprising a pair of cufflinks, a pair of dress studs and four buttons, of canted square form, unsigned, all with reg no. 18435, cufflink panel length 12.7mm, 14.1g total, in Cartier box (8)Condition Report: All pieces in very good original bright condition, all onyx in tact with no chips or damage, just light surface abrasions, all stones present and generally well matched with clean facet faces and sharp facet edges, nice bright order with a few minor inclusions visible through a loupe, some pieces engraved with registration no. 48435, all pieces unsigned, local private vendor.
An 14ct white gold aquamarine and diamond dress ring, total diamond content approx 0.4ct, setting height 8mm, size M, 3.8gCondition Report: Very good original bright condition, all stones present with no chips or cracks, aquamarine has clean facet faces and sharp facet edges with a very slightly abraded girdle, diamonds are bright and well matched, some with a very slight pinkish hue when viewed under a loupe, only a couple of extremely small black spot inclusions, settings nicely polished and stamped 14k.
An Art Deco style large aquamarine and diamond dress ring, with round and baguette-cut stepped diamond shoulders and openwork bridge, rectangular step-cut aquamarine approx 16ct, stone dimensions: length - 17.29mm, width - 14.19mm, depth - 9.35mm, setting height 17.7mm, size R, 8.4gCondition Report: Very good original bright condition, all stones present with no major chips or cracks, aqua has 1 very small girdle nibble in the centre of a short edge, facet faces have a few tiny abrasions visible through a loupe and stepped facet edges have a few very small abrasions, aqua exhibits rain-like inclusions but no other major obvious flaws, diamonds have clean facet faces and sharp facet edges, generally a very slight hint of yellow but still bright, settings lightly surface scratched and completely unmarked although most likely high carat white gold.
