DESIGN FOR A MEMORIAL CLOISTER watercolour over pencil on paper board 49.5 x 87cm Provenance: Bonhams 8.9.98. Lot 92 A design for a three sided cloister-columbarium, with a central chapel. The form derives from the columbarium at PÅ re-Lachaise cemetery in Paris, which opened in 1889. The style and execution of this large watercolour is similar to other designs by Farey. The style of dress of the figures suggests a date of c.1910. The location of the cloister, if it is more than just a design, has not been established.

A German Third Reich Luftwaffe Dress Dagger, Second Pattern, the steel blade etched maker's name, SMF (Stocker & Co), Solingen, the white metal hilt with wirebound orange plastic grip (plastic cracked and chipped), pebbled white metal scabbard with twin ring suspensions; together with a ''Hitler's Dank'' badge, awarded as a token of appreciation for donations to the Winter Aid programme 1933-34, a Third Reich naval ''tinnie'' badge, ''Seefahrt ist Not'', and a ''fantasy'' Third Reich S.S. pantograph (butterfly) knife (4) Dagger - Blade with some light rusting and pitting. Some wear to hilt. Grip cracked and chipped. Scabbard finish tarnished/rusted and with some dents to one side. Butterfly knife - Slight wear but generally good. Dank badge - Good overall. Tinnie - Good overall.
A George V 1850 Pattern Artillery Officer's Sword, the part-fullered, single edge blade, length 85 cm, etched with the martial trophies and thunderbolts emblem of the Royal Artillery and Royal cypher between panels of foliage and other decorative devices, the back marked, ''London Made'', plated triple bar hilt, wire-bound fishskin grip, leather dress knot Blade with considerable surface rust. Plating to hilt worn. Knot tatty. Scabbard lacking.
A Dutch Diplomat's Sword, the 76.5cm triangular section fullered steel blade bearing traces of etched decoration, the brass hilt with shell guard cast with the coat of arms of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, with foliate cast knuckle bow and baluster pommel, with mother of pearl grip scales, lacks scabbard; an 18th Century Infantry Officer's Sword, with 77.5cm single edge fullered steel blade, the gilt brass stirrup hilt with shell cast boat shape guard, bud quillons and copper wire bound grip with fluted ovoid pommel, lacks scabbard; a 1786 Pattern Infantry Officer's Dress Sword, the 81.5cm single edge fullered steel blade with traces of bluing, engraved and gilt with the Royal coat of arms, crowned GR cypher, martial trophies and Warranted, the back edge signed in gilt Woolley & Deakin, the gilt brass stirrup hilt with double shell guard cast and chased with foliage, with foliate sheathed quillon, silver wire bound grip and foliate sheathed urn finial, with a brass mounted leather scabbard, lacks suspension ring (3)1 - Etching of the blade is very faint. The mother of pearl grip scales are chipped and cracked. 2 - Black patching to blade with nicks to edge and damage to the tip. Minor wear to the gilding. 3 - Pitting to the blade, with tiny nicks to edge. Hilt with wear to the gilding, a break to the top of the knuckle bow and a small break in the silver wire binding. The leather scabbard has a crease to one side half way down. There is no evidence that it has had a suspension ring.

A Good North West African Nimcha, the slightly curved, part-fullered, single edge blade, length 83.5 cm, stamped motif to the ricasso, the gold wire-inlaid hilt with triple pendant quillons and angular knucklebow, shaped rhinoceros horn grip with enamelled white metal collar mount, sectional silver-covered wood scabbard with chased geometric and naturalistic decoration, 19th century Provenance: The Collection of Sir Emerson Crawford Herdman KBE, worn as part of the North Irish Horse dress uniform. He was on the staff of the Ulster Division at the Battle of the SommeSome rusting and pitting to blade. Slight rusting to hilt. Horn grip with natural cracks. Scabbard with hole to upper white metal section. One suspension loop broken and repair in same area. Split and other damages to two lower metal sections of scabbard.
Lieutentant James William Main D.S.C., Royal Navy:- his Second World black silk bicorn hat with gold bullion trim, a pair of gold lace and morocco epaulettes, a pair of rank shoulder straps and dress belt, all by Gieves, London in original black japanned tin, also his tropical service helmet in tin; a Naval dirk, the blade etched with ER VIII cypher, with brass mounted leather scabbard; three copper dishes from HMS Royal Sovereign 1917, his commission to Sub-Lieutenant, cased drawing instruments, medal ribbons, a Defence Medal and a copy of award letter for DSC, various photographs and ephemera, together with a 110cm by 224cm Union Jack **Lt. James William Main was awarded the DSC for his skilful navigation to clear a path through a minefield off Ouistreham, Sword Beach, Normandy, see page 5455 Supplement to London Gazette 24th November 1944. Two Midshipman's Journals covering his early naval career, and other items are held in the Imperial War Museum archives
