Circle of Sir Peter Lely, PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG LADY, SEATED FULL LENGTH IN A RED DRESS, IN A WOODED LANDSCAPE, A SPANIEL AT HER FEET, Oil on canvas, 112.5cm x 81cm. Provenance:The Right Honourable John Inglis of Glencorse, Lord Justice General of Scotland; thence by descent. John Inglis, Lord Glencorse (1810-1891) graduated from Glasgow University and Balliol college, Oxford. He became an eminent figure in Scottish law and was appointed Lord Justice General in 1867. He is best remembered for masterminding the Universities (Scotland) Act of 1858, for trying the last man in Glasgow to be hanged in public and for his defence in 1857 of Madeline Smith against charges of poisoning her former lover.

He exhibited with the Royal Academy of Arts in London from 1902-1940. His primary subject matter was portraiture, landscapes and figurative work. His wife Maud and daughter Edith were also artists., The work is contained within its original elaborately decorated gilt plaster and wooden frame with foliage and acorn decoration.. See illustration
Miss Mary Annie Sloane A.R.E. (c.1870-1961). Portrait of a Young Lady, three quarter length, wearing a blue dress and large bonnet. Inscribed with the artist`s name and the title Portrait on an exhibition label verso, oil on board, 30.5cm by 24.5cm, The artist was born in Leicester and studied art at Leicester Art School and at Bushey under Herkomer, as well as at the Royal College of Art under Short. She exhibited at the leading London galleries from 1889 onwards, was a member of the Leicester Society of Artists and lived at Enderby and London.
