Lot 583

A purple and black striped brocaded silk formal Dress with a peplum, black lace frilled sleeves, bonnet with lace veil and purple and black Carriage Parasol (A/F). The whole outfit was worn by Priscilla Bright McLaren (one of the first British suffragists) for an afternoon reception at Holyrood Palace in 1853. Her husband was Duncan McLaren Lord Provost 1851-54 and a Liberal MP. Priscilla was first president of Edinburgh Society for Womens Suffrage in 1867. She spoke at 1882 Glasgow suffrage demonstration. Sold with a copy of a photograph of the dress being worn by her great granddaughter and copies of photographs of Priscilla, who worked for other causes. Sold with her black lace shawls and a bonnet.
