A large box containing a wide assortment of Catholic Church Dress including capes, one fur lined, two academic hoods, a red coat labelled M. Bertholon Barthomeuf, Clermont Ferrand, purple edged cloak, etc. Many unworn and various sizes. With a group of Church Banners and a leather carrying belt.
A purple and black striped brocaded silk formal Dress with a peplum, black lace frilled sleeves, bonnet with lace veil and purple and black Carriage Parasol (A/F). The whole outfit was worn by Priscilla Bright McLaren (one of the first British suffragists) for an afternoon reception at Holyrood Palace in 1853. Her husband was Duncan McLaren Lord Provost 1851-54 and a Liberal MP. Priscilla was first president of Edinburgh Society for Womens Suffrage in 1867. She spoke at 1882 Glasgow suffrage demonstration. Sold with a copy of a photograph of the dress being worn by her great granddaughter and copies of photographs of Priscilla, who worked for other causes. Sold with her black lace shawls and a bonnet. WORN AT QUEEN VICTORIA'S FUNERAL, ROYAL IRISH CONSTABULAY. A R.I.C. Dress Sword and Scabbard, by Sexton of Dawson St., Dublin, the engraved 32 1/2'' blade with a steel basket hilt inset with engraved crowned harp. Provenance: This sword was worn at the funeral of Queen Victoria, and then passed down by family descent until it was offered for sale in these rooms, Independence auction, 17th April 2007, lot 542, where it was purchased by the current vendor.
