Cross-dressing.- Choisy (François-Timoléon, l'Abbé de) Histoire de Madame la Comtesse Des Barres A Madame la Marquise de Lambert, title with woodcut ornament, woodcut head-piece, ocassional spotting, the odd small stain, contemporary mottled calf, richly gilt spine in compartments and with red morocco label, little rubbed, a very good copy, [Gay II, 520], 12mo, Brussels, François Foppens, 1736.⁂ De Choisy's father was part of the household of the Duke of Orléans, and his mother was on intimate terms with Anne of Austria. On a whim of his mother he was dressed like a girl until he was eighteen. After appearing for a short time in man's costume he resumed woman's dress upon receiving the no doubt sarcastic advice of Madame de La Fayette. He delighted in the most extravagant toilettes until he was publicly rebuked by the Duc de Montausier, whereupon he retired to the provinces.
