Russell RA pinxt./1800-’ (upper left), pastel and bodycolour, 23½ x 165?8in. (59.7 x 42.2cm.), Of the several “Matthews” listed for this period, only one attained the rank of the sitter. John Matthews was made a Captain on 13th September 1793 and was still serving in this rank when he died on 21st March 1798, indicating this is a posthumous commemorative image.
