An 1830-40 Bone Fan, carved and pierced and silvered and gilded, the guards with the addition of mother-of-pearl overlay. The double paper leaf features several charming depictions of fashionable ladies on the recto, the verso with a depiction of Indian people in perhaps wedding costume, certainly a formal presentation, with domed and spired buildings in the background. The reserves to the verso are indicative of a detailed dress fabric of the period. Guard length 25cm. Some wear to the leaf with a small stain to the left on the verso. Good strong colour. Some loss to the MOP. Repair on the lower guard down by the rivet. The silvering is dull. Loss to the paper on the verso at the top of the lower guard.
A Mid-19th Century Bone Fan, with simple silvering and gilding, mainly of meandering stems with leaves, the double paper leaf with two colourful scenes surrounded by strong blue reserves. To the left, a couple of young ladies in their salon, reading what appears to be a letter from a beau. To the right, the beau calls upon one of the young ladies, who is taking a stroll accompanied by an elderly chaperone or relative. The blue reserves highlight further imagery, of Gods and cupid, in bold gold. The verso, decorated in gold on white, shows a scene of travellers in foreign lands, with their camels and tents. To each side, peacocks and rich gold reserves. Guard length 27cm; A Mid-19th Century Bone Fan, with simple gilding and well-shaped and carved guards. The double lithographed leaf shows a gentle scene of a family group beside a lake on which others are rowing. The relatively plain reserves are filled with leaves, flowers and foliage in soft green and brown. The verso, with an elaborate scrolling and floral design filling most of the reserves, features a central scene of an outdoor gathering, a grand lady being approached by a wealthy gentleman in the foreground. Guard length 27cm; and A Circa 1800 Ivory Fan, with carved monture, the guard detail very delicate and in panels. The small gorge is most delicately and intricately carved with figures. The double paper leaf is painted with a depiction of a fine lady in classical dress, being crowned with a flower garland by Cupid, his bow and quiver at his feet, in the presence of another finely dressed lady. The verso is plain. Guard length 24cm (3). Fan 1 Minor wear to some folds, really quite bright and clean. When closes the gorge appears quite bowed in the centre. Fan 2 - Some splitting to the folds and slight wear to the leaf. The leaf colour was probably gold at some time but is now quite dull/matt. Fan 3 - Very poor. The leaf is very dry and split. The paint colour is strong and the facial details very good. The monture lacks the middle section to the lower gorge and the upper guard is broken mid- way and there is some loss to the ivory. Two inner sticks stuck to the upper guard. Tiny losses to the gorge. This has been a beautiful fan.
A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, silvered and gilded to the upper guards and the gorge, carving to the guards being quite intricate. The double silk leaf is painted with delicate flowers, birds and a butterfly in pastel colours. The verso is plain. Guard length 28cm; and An Early 18th Century Ivory Fan, with slender sticks, the monture painted in pastel colours, each guard having intricately carved panels, a portrait of a gentleman to the upper guard with a small ivory figure below, the lower guard carved and painted with a different figure, and small flowers. The gorge features several carved cherubs, flowers and scrolling, with gold highlights. The double paper leaf is simply painted with a couple in fine dress, seated on a rock in a rural setting, with two further perhaps more rural folk making conversation. Simple buildings with birds along the roofline are behind. The verso is plain save for a simple drawing of fencing and vegetation. Guard length 27cm (2). Fan 1 - The gilding is dull. Some very pale staining to the leaf. Fan 2 - The leaf has been repaired in places. The first stick in to the left is stuck to the guard. The other guard shows a repair at lower level. A sliver of ivory is missing from the upper part of the lower guard.
