The Beja battle badge was designed by Lt Col W D McN Graham, awarded to members of the 172nd Field Regiment Royal Artillery and 5th Battalion Hampshire Regiment. Believed to be only 200 of these badges awarded to men who fought in the heroic action in North Africa 1943. 172nd Field Regiment RA was formed in 1942 in St Leonards from some coastal batteries. They left UK for North Africa in January 1943 losing a battery and a half of 25 pounder guns when the ship carrying them was sunk. On 24th February the Regiment took up position covering Hunt’s Gap near Beja in support of 128 Inf Bde. The regimental history for the 172nd Field Regiment states, “155 Battery who were out with the leading battalion prepared to do battle. This time the hun pressed home his attack very hard indeed and the battle raged furiously all day with the guns engaging tanks over open sights and acquitting themselves magnificently in their first battle. The guns were continually strafed by aircraft and one by one the infantry positions were over run. Magnificent work was done by many people on that day, not least of whom were those who carried up ammunition under constant air attack. By 1500 hrs the road had been cut behind the battery but they continued to fight on, and it was not until 1800 hrs that the last message was received on the wireless – the encouraging ‘V’ sign in morse. And so in the first day’s battle the regiment had lost a complete battery, or so the enemy must have thought. In three days 1 officer and 70 other ranks had come across the hills to our own lines and steps were immediately taken to reform the battery. But meanwhile the remainder of the regiment was fully employed in beating off attacks of the enemy who was attempting to reach the broad plains beyond Beja and so turn the whole of the Allied flank.” The Brigade commander recommended that the Battery should be balloted for the award of the Victoria Cross for their actions, but this never happened. The commanding officer felt that those actively involved in the tank battle should receive some recognition and designed the Beja badge and had them produced locally.Late Rod Flood collection

By reason of the ships position relative to the smokescreen, HMS Gloucester bore the brunt of the fire from a Littoria class Battleship for some twenty minutes. He handled his ship throughout with coolness and good judgement and transmitted valuable reports. This is more commendable as considerable doubt existed as to Gloucesters ability to maintain high speed owing to a defective bearing which materialised two days before and had been rectified by ships staff the previous day and must have been the cause of great anxiety. He is particularly celebrated for his frescos, including those which he produced for the Municipio in Trento, the San Pietro Martire and the Palazzo Vescovile, both in Verona. He often depicted dramatic Classical subjects, such as the fresco of Phaeton which he painted on the ceiling of the Palazzo Chiericati, a work for which he is particularly lauded.

Several versions of the same portrait, with small variations, were made by Edridge, doubtless as a result of further royal commissions - see for example one which appeared at Christie's, London, 20 March 1984, lot 75. In this preparatory sketch, Prince Ernest is depicted wearing Windsor Uniform, a form of dress which was introduced by George III in 1779, comprising a tail coat of dark blue cloth with scarlet collar and cuffs. He also wears the insignia of the Order of the Garter. As a young man Edridge was apprenticed to the portrait engraver William Pether (c.1739-1821). He later attended the Royal Academy Schools, and from 1786 he exhibited as a miniaturist at the Royal Academy. It is for small full-length portrait drawings that he is best known. These are as evocative of their period as are those by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) of sitters in early 19th-century France or Rome.
