Scarce, only one institutional location found (Wellcome Library). The volume contains an interesting array of receipts including 'aspragus & chickens to dress, crust for large pyes, curran wine. Dr Mead's receipts for the bite of a mad dog, directions for preparing Mrs. Stephen's medicine in a solid form by Dr Hartley, Mrs. Stephen's Receipt for the cure of the stone and gravel, Shrewsbury cakes, Scotch collops, and Treatise on the teeth' etc.

The Hair completely analyzed, as to its Growth, Nature, Colour, &c. and all and every Article used in the Hair, on the Head, Face, &c. as, False Hair, Perfumery, Cosmetics, &c. clearly analyzed and examined; with a History of the Hair and Head Dress, from the earliest Ages to the present Time, particularly as they have appeared upon the English Stage for these last Two Hundred Years; with Strictures on the present Performers belonging to each Theatre. A remarkable and very scarce study of hairdressing in the Georgian age, with engraved illustrations depicting the extravagant hairstyles of the time. The work treats hair and its growth, the tools used to dress it, methods for constructing head dresses using false hair and stiffeners, and for applying cosmetics. Stewart comments on diet and lifestyle as an influence on hair quality. ESTC lists 6 copies in 5 UK locations: Birmingham Library, BL (two copies), Edinburgh University, Bodleian, and Wellcome Institute.

Johnson, 1790, 19 copper-engraved plates (Bushmen's Habitations, Hottentots, Horned Snake, Camelopardalis, and 15 botanical subjects), folding engraved map at rear with some light spotting and minor waterstain to lower right edge, early ink ownership signature to title of Marcus Gage, contemporary half calf gilt in very good condition, 4to (Qty: 1)Cox I p. 390; ESTC T89158; Mendelssohn II p. 143. An account of four expeditions into the Hottentot Country and Caffraria, containing descriptions of the geography, botany and zoology of the region, as well as the dress and conduct of the natives, in particular the author's encounter with the Caffres and their chief, Khouta, in a region east of the Great Fish River which the explorer Sparrman did not reach (Paterson's and Sparrman's routes are marked on the folding map contained in this work). 'Although the principal feature of the work is a description of the botanical specimens ... there are many interesting notes respecting the natives, with a few remarks on the Dutch colonists' (Mendelssohn). Paterson was later appointed governor of New South Wales but 'historians have rightly judged him more important as a natural scientist than as an administrator' (ODNB).

Huth 56; not in Mennessier de la Lance. Only edition of this spendid description of the royal Portuguese riding school, with strong, rich impressions of these engraved plates.

A vintage brown rabbit fur coat, 3/4 length, labeled M. Fletcher Southport, size 10 UK together with a vintage light brown fur jacket size 8 and a vintage silk nightwear dress in green colour, size 8 - 10 UK. The brown rabbit fur coat has damages here and there, one of the damages is at the back, there is a rip in the pelt on the lower right side of the coat, the lining looks in good condition, the label is hand stitched and loose on a side. The pockets present no holes. The brown jacket has no label, seems to be M. Fletcher as it does have monogram on the inside of the lining. The fur is in good condition overall, however the lining presents signs of wear and tear, some rips and damages to the neckline as well. The jacket has no pockets. The silk dress is in good condition, has no damages, no stains and no repairs done to it. It is size 8 - 10 UK

American School, mid-19th century PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN, SAID TO BE FROM THE LONGWORTH FAMILY, CINCINNATI, OHIO, HALF LENGTH SEATED IN A BROWN DRESS, A VINE TO HER RIGHT Inscribed verso 'Catawba Grape, Ohio, Longworth family', oil on canvas 81 x 66cm The Longworth family is closely associated with Cincinnati, Ohio and was founded by Nicholas Longworth (1783-1863), a banker and winemaker known as the 'father of American grape culture'. He planted a vineyard of the Catawba grape on the Ohio River outside the city and began making sparkling wine using the champagne method. Both still and sparkling wine were exported widely, from California to Europe, and his wines were also popular among the many German immigrants who were arriving in Ohio. The peak of its production was reached in 1859, but in the 1860s the vines were decimated by mildew and many vineyards were either torn up or abandoned with the advent of the Civil War.
