Cornelius Johnson (1593 - 1661) Portrait of Frances Howard (later Carr), Countess of Somerset (1590 - 1632) The Countess of Somerset was the daughter of Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk. She married firstly Robert Devereux, 3rd Earl of Essex, and secondly Robert Carr, 1st Earl of Somerset. The lady in half length, wearing a red dress and a white lace collar and cuffs, with intricate chains decorated with enamel and pearl floral motifs Oil on panel Provenance: Sotheby's, British Paintings 1500-1850, 10 November 1993, Lot 14, where purchased by the present owner Cornelius Johnson (1593-1661), also known as Cornelius Janssens van Ceulen, was born in London to Dutch parents. Johnson’s career flourished in both countries, and reflected the cultural and artistic exchanges of the era. Johnson’s portraits can be characterised by a meticulous attention to detail and a keen sensitivity to the character of his sitters, capturing the essence of his subjects with remarkable intimacy and realism. Johnson’s mastery of technique, influenced by both Dutch and English artistic traditions, consolidated his position amongst the elite circles of society, and his patrons regularly included members of the royal court. Britains - Set 1331 - 'Royal Engineers Limbered Wagon' [1940-41 Only], comprising: 2 x Horse Team at the Gallop with Driver in Active Service Dress & Steel Helmet & 2 x Wheeled Limber. Condition generally appears Good Plus although rear limber appears to have been repainted. Not checked for completeness, see photo.

Christian Thomsen (Danish 1860-1921) for Royal Copenhagen, an early 20th Century porcelain group "Lady & Beau", incised with initials 'Chr Th' and dated '1918', factory marks to underside, no.1969 148, 25cms (10in) high, together with "The Kiss", underglaze initials 'Chr Th' to reverse, factory mark to underside, no. 2046 and initialled 'OR', 22cm (8.5in) high, another Royal Copenhagen figural group depicting a Chinese scholar and child in traditional dress, raised on canted rectangular oriental style base, factory marks and model no. 1847, 20.5cm (8in) high, and Jens Peter Dahl-Jensen for Bing & Grondahl (Copenhagen), a porcelain model of a peacock, printed mark in green, signed 'Dahl-Jensen', no. 1628 and initialled Jo, 38cm (15in) long. (4)please see further images for marks on each. The figures are in a clean condition with no visible signs of marking or damage. There are some very small signs of pitting on all four figures. There is label residue on the peacock.

A large Staffordshire figure 'The Lion Slayer', circa 1860, modelled as an impressive bearded figure in Scottish Highland dress standing on a rock and clasping a lion carcass in his right hand and a saber in his left, possibly depicting the notorious Roualeyn George Gordon-Cumming, polychrome enamel painted with gilded details, figure positioned on a naturalistic, ovoid, gilt-lined base bearing 'THE LION SLAYER' in gilt lettering, 41.5cm high.Note: Roualeyn George Gordon-Cumming (1820 – 1866) was a Scottish traveler and sportsman, known as the "lion hunter". The story of his exploits is vividly told in his book, Five Years of a Hunter's Life in the Far Interior of South Africa, 1851. In the same year, Gordon-Cumming exhibited his collection of hunting trophies at the Great Exhibition.
A Staffordshire figure of Robert Burns and Mary Campbell, circa 1850, modelled as lovers in Scottish dress, embracing under a moulded arboreal arch, decorated with thistles and applied clay foliate 'tufts', a seated dog modelled to the foreground, mounted on a gilt-lined, ovoid base inscribed 'Burns & HD Mary' (Highland Mary), 32.5cm high.Note: ‘Highland Mary’ was the nickname given to Mary Campbell, with whom Robert Burns had a passionate love affair in 1786. Cut short by Mary’s untimely death, Burns was inspired to write the song ‘Highland Mary’ to mourn his lost love: “But oh! fell Death's untimely frost, That nipt my Flower sae early! Now green's the sod, and cauld's the clay That wraps my Highland Mary!”
