MYLES BIRKET FOSTER, RWS (1825-1899) A SUMMER`S DAY IN THE GARDEN WITLEY signed with monogram, watercolour heightened with white, 14 x 21cm Provenance: A gift to the present vendors in 1965. This watercolour of `The Hill`, the house that Birket Foster built for himself, set in twenty acres at Witley, Surrey and his home from 1863 to 1893, shows the building after the large gabled extension was added in 1866. A photograph of the period taken from the same spot with the large rose bush to fore, is amongst those in a Foster family album. It is reproduced in Reynolds, plt 69 ( J Reynolds, Birket Foster, 1984). The sole figure of a young woman in a pink dress is probably Foster`s second wife Frances, née Watson (b1841) whom he married in 1864, or one of his daughters, Margaret Ann (b1856) or Ellen (b1857). ++In good condition with slight fading, undisturbed since framed in the early 1960s
