Seated half length, wearing a white dress and hat, with a pale pink corsage, oil on canvas, in an associated frame (possibly French) 76 x 59.5cm. * This is a variant of the picture exhibited at The Royal Academy, 1802, no.112 (as `Mrs R. Westmacott`), which was sold at Sothebys, London, November 28th 2002, lot 168 * The sitter (nee Wilkinson) was married to the sculptor Sir Richard Westmacott, RA (1775-1856) from 1798. This picture has passed by descent in the sitter's family. *Condition: Lined; retouching; some bitumen damage, principally in the background and not affecting the principal subject.

Seated half length, wearing a russet dress and ochre mantle, seated upon a sofa, a swag and pillar beyond, distant landscape, oil on panel 34 x 28cm. Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitter. The sitter inherited the estate of Naseby in Northamptonshire and was renowned for her beauty as much as her wealth. She married her cousin John Purcell and, conventionally, took his surname until 1818. In that year, her husband changed his own surname to Fitzgerald whereupon she became Mrs John Fitzgerald. Her son, Edward (1809-1883), who translated `The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam` in 1859, disliked it: `I somehow detest my own scrolloping surname`. *Condition: Some slight craquelure; needs a light clean; slight paint separation on sitter's right hip.

Founded in Epernay France by Viscount Florens de Castellane in 1895, the champagne house De Castellane adopted the red diagonal Cross of Saint Andrew as the emblem of his brand in tribute to the oldest regiment of Champagne; the champagne became popular during the Belle Epoque period and is still considered a premium brand today (now under the ownership of Laurent-Perrier).
