Sir Frederick William Burton, A.R.H.A., R.H.A. 1816 - 1900Watercolour: "A Lady and her Child" a delightful scene with mother in large velvet low-cut dress seated on a verandah with young blonde haired child. Signed with monogram F.W.B. & dated 1840, approx. 61cms x 46.5cms (24" x 18 1/4"), in gilt slip frame. (1)* Sir Frederick was born at Corofin House, Co. Clare in 1816. He exhibited various subjects at R.H.A. and other venues between 1832, at age 16, up until about 1874 when he was appointed Director of National Gallery of London, a position he held until 1894. He died at Kensington in 1900. The above lot although partly unfinished, appears to be the subject which was exhibited at the R.H.A. in 1840. Burton's most famous work, "Helehil and Hildebrand, or the meeting on the Turret Stairs," Exhibited at Old Watercolour Society in 1864, and now in the National Gallery of Ireland, was voted by the Irish Public the most admired painting in Ireland.

An Art Deco Rosenthal porcelain figure, designed by Gustav Oppel in 1927, no.962/2, modelled as a dancing nude woman, 26 cm high, together with six other figures and two ladies' beaded evening purses (af) (9)The Rosenthal figure has a broken thumb and scratches and marks consistent with age. It would benefit from a clean. No apparent chips to the base or restoration. The other figures also show wear consistent with age. Arm of the figure of the boy has been broken and repaired and his hair has snapped off. The cherub's fingers have broken. The fingers of the woman with children have broken along with something on her back. Some chips to the dress and rubbing to the gilt of the ballerina.
