A collection of 19th-century English watercolour sketches and drawings of Indian scenes (topographical views, landscapes, buildings, temples, soldiers, figures in native dress), including several caricatures (officer of the Royal Navy, Guards officer, satirical cartoon). Most drawings bear a pencil inscription that identifies the location (Calcutta, Delhi), usually to verso, dated 1829 - 1840. One page bears a manufacturer's watermark for J Whatman 1830. Produced at a time when the East India Company was controlling much of the Indian subcontinent, pre-British Raj. Approx. 30 original drawings in total. Travel/Exploration interest. (23)
