A mid 17th century embroidered panel, with a central lady depicting the sense of smell holding a three-dimensional flower comprised of needle lace, wrapped wire and petal-shaped satin fabric. The lady dressed in a green split skirted dress with wide collar and cuffs, all worked in needle lace, the petticoat worked in metal thread and silk combination needle lace with applied metal trim. The figure worked in stump work technique with wooden hands, one hand holding a fan, the face shown as ink drawn. The lady stands under an ornate canopy on a hummock of metal burden stitch, the canopy drapes being needle lace and the background having been embroidered with metal threads. The rest of the ground is embroidered with large scale flowers in silk covered metal thread work and with a hound chasing a rabbit to the foreground. The ground being further detailed with spangles.
