He was awarded an immediate Military Cross for the action at Djebel Garci on 19th-20th April 1943, it was in this action that Chhelu Ram 4/6th Rajputana Rifles was awarded the Victorian Cross. The recommendation for Donovan’s Military Cross was as follows, “This officer displayed outstanding gallantry, determination and devotion during the attack by the 5th Ind Inf Bde against the Djebel Garci position 19-20 April 43. Capt Donovan was in command of a coy which was ordered forward to support the leading coy, which required help to secure certain vital ground in face of a determined enemy resistance. The coy moved forward with great dash but come under intense MG and mortar fire while still short of its objective. Capt Donovan was wounded almost immediately, both his legs being broken. In spite of this severe and crippling wound; this officer attempted to struggle forward with his men. Being unable to do so, he refused to be evacuated, and though in considerable pain, continued to command his coy as best as he could by runner and signal. The example and encouragement given by this officer so inspired his coy that the enemy was driven back with heavy loss, and the objective secured. Only when this had been done, and he was satisfied that the important ground was securely held did Capt Donovan permit himself to be evacuated. His gallantry, devotion and complete disregard of his personal safety played a vital part at a critical moment of the battle.” This action was one of the last Gurkha charges with Kukri, the German soldiers held strong positions in the mountains but were so shocked by the courage of the Gurkha’s that they retreated. This however came at a heavy cost and the casualty rate on both sides were high. Much of the fighting was hand to hand combat.
