A Pre-1942 Pattern Officer’s Service Dress Uniform, comprising jacket bearing Royal Engineers’ collar insignia and Sussex Regiment buttons, with tailor’s label ‘Meyer & Mortimer’ and inscribed in ink ‘Viscount Cowdray, 1940‘, trousers, and shirt; and an Officer’s Battle Dress Uniform, comprising blouse bearing the insignia of the Home Guard, with tailor’s label ‘Meyer & Mortimer’ and inscribed in ink ‘Viscount Cowdray, 1940’, trousers and shirt. Provenance: Lt-Col. Wheetman John Churchill Pearson, 3rd Viscount Cowdray, b. 27th Feb. 1910, d. 19 Jan. 1995. Fought in the Second World War, where he was severely wounded in the retreat to Dunkirk, his left arm was amputated. He was decorated with the award of Territorial Decoration and gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel between 1940 and 1941 in the service of the Home Guard.

The regiment was disbanded following India’s independence in 1947

F.G. Lawrence. D.S.O. S.W. Bord.), (iv) King’s South Africa Medal, two clasps South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 (Lt. F.G. Lawrence. D.S.O. S.Wales.Bdr.), (v) 1914 Star (Capt. F.G. Lawrence. S.Wales.Bord.), (vi) British War and Victory Medals (Lt. Col. F.G. Lawrence), MID, oak leaf, (vii) Croix De Guerre, (France) with star, (viii) Croix De Guerre (Belgium), mounted for wearing, with related dress miniatures. Lawrence, Frederick George, was born 21 Aug. 1874, son of the late Hugh M. Lawrence. He was gazetted Second Lieutenant in the South Wales Borderers 10 Oct. 1894, and became Lieutenant 15 Nov. 1896. He served in South Africa, 1899-1902: as Railway Staff Officer 14 Jan. to 4 March, 1900, and 5 March, 1900 to 18 Aug, 1902, in Cape Colony, Orange River Colony and the Transvaal; was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette, 10 Sept. 1901); received the Queen’s Medal with three clasps, the King’s Medal with two clasps, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (London Gazette, 26 June, 1902); Frederick George Lawrence, Lieut., South Wales Borderers. In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa, he was invested by the King on 24 Oct. 1902. He was Adjutant, 3rd South Wales Borderers, Brecon, 1 Sept. 1902 to 13 Sept. 1905; was promoted to Captain 3 March, 1906; was Officer, Company of Gentleman Cadets, Royal Military College, 1 Feb. 1910 to 31 Jan. 1914. He served in the European War; was promoted to Major 28 April 1915; held a Special Appointment, G.H.Q., B.E.F., 23 Oct. 1915 to 31 March, 1916; Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel 1 April to 20 Aug. 1916; D.A.Q.M.G., 4th Army, British Armies in France, 19 Nov. 1916 to 28 Jan 1917; A.Q.M.G., 15th Army Corps, British Armies in France, 29 Jan to 15 Sept. 1917. He was A.Q.M.G. Southern Command, from 31 March 1918, and Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel; G.S.O.3., he married in 1902, Frances Mary, daughter of the late Osborne E. Mortimer, they had one daughter.
