A group of four Egyptian pottery shabtisXXII Dynasty.Simple, pottery mould-made shabtis: 2 overseer figures wear daily dress [short tunic]; and have a sidelock of hair. L arm by side, R arm across chest, hold faintly modelled whip; legs indicated, with – unusually - right leg advanced, flat backs; 2 worker figures are mummiform, with tripartite wig, arms across chest, mattock very faintly indicated; flat backs. Wears tripartite wig secured with a fillet added in black, and a sleeved robe with a long kilt. Eyes added in black. LH bent across chest modelled in relief holding a whip added in black, RH by side. Back not modelled but rounded. Egyptian Shabti of GaoutseshenXXII Dynasty.Deir-el-Bahri, cache 2Daughter of the grand pontif Menkheper-re, and grand-daughter of the high-priest MenKhepe-re. She was the niece of another person also called Gaw-seshen; her other titles known from associated grave goods were ‘mistress of the house’, ‘chantress of Amun’ and ‘noble lady’. Her mummy, a wooden stela and 3 papyri are known, her coffin is in Leiden.Overseer figure in daily dress, mould-made: Wears modelled tripartite wig with a fillet added in black – the rear part is short. Eyes indicated in black. Wears daily dress: baggy-sleeved tunic with apron. Unusually for an overseer figure, both(long), curving fore-arms are crossed on the chest, with hands holding a pair of whips with long curving lashes, added in black. Upper part has a somewhat rounded appearance, the wide arms making a X shape in the middle of the body, characteristic features of her shabtis. Egyptian shabti for Djed-Mut-iwef-ankh (‘when Mut speaks, he lives’), a priest of Amun. Kitchen mentions a person of this name who was a dignitary at Thebes; his probable tomb at Thebes also lists his titles as the ‘out-line draughtsman of the House of Gold, Fashioning the gods of the Estate of Amun’ Third Intermediate Period. C. 900 B.C.Overseer figure in daily dress, wearing a long kilted robe: Wears duplex(?) wig with front lappets, secured by a fillet indicated in blue on the black wig and in black on the body of the figure; the fillet has very long streamers at the rear, hanging almost to the feet. Eyes / brows indicated in black. L arm across chest holds a whip, R arm by side of body. Lower legs/feet indicated. Text in black down front. 13.2cm high.Inscribed for: Hm-nTr n jmn, Dd-mwt j(w).f anx, mAa-xrw ‘the Priest of Amun, Djed-Mut-iw-ef-ankh, the justified’Probably Thebes: tomb no 117, originally dating from Dynasty XI, is the likely origin of the figure. A 19th century continental naval officer’s dress sword, plain shallow diamond section blade 28”, gilt brass hilt with double shell guard the front fixed and embossed with crowned fouled anchor on trophy of flags and foliage, the back hinged and plain, oak leaf panelled knucklebow, and pommel, wirebound (loose) wooden grip, with knot, in its leather scabbard (old repair to centre), with plain brass locket and foliate engraved chape. GC, the hilt retaining approx 40% gilt.
