Circle of Jacob Huysmans (Flemish, c.1633-1696)Portrait of a lady, half-length, in a silver dress and pearl necklaceoil on canvas63 x 49.5cmCondition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The edges of the lining canvas have become brittle with age and are starting to fail, although the canvas tension is currently good. There is a small patch on the reverse of the painting securing an old damage. In the dark areas of the background there are localised areas of raised and flaking paint. The paint in the area of the sitter's face is worn and abraded. Retouchings in this area are well matched to the original but cover the age cracks. The varnish is clear and even with a light layer of dust across the surface. The frame is in a stable condition with losses to the gesso and gilding at the corners.
Attributed to Margaret Carpenter (1793-1872)Portrait of a lady, head and shoulders, in a white lace dress trimmed with blue ribbons, a window beyondoil on canvas76 x 74cmProvenance: Horton Lodge, Windsor, Berkshire.Condition report: Craquelure throughout the figure and face, with risk of flaking to the face. A lot of paint flaking and loss throughout the background, with larger losses close to edges. A hole lower left corner, and a very small tear in the paint loss section to the right of the sitter. A scratch close to the shoulder. The canvas has cockled in the background area and bulges along the lower edge. Surface dust and dirt. Seen under UV, the bloom of the varnish makes it difficult to tell, but there do not appear to be any prominent areas of retouching.

The picture is in plane with good tension. There are a few small, scattered losses to the paint layer but overall it is stable and secure. There is a large areas of overpaint on the sitter’s right cheek, eye as well as in the hair. Other areas of overpaint are scattered across the background and blue dress, these are fairly well matched to the original. The varnish is slightly yellowed but even and semi-glossy. There is a thick layer of surface dirt on the front and reverse of the painting.

The retouchings are well matched to the original. The varnish is clear, even and glossy. The frame is worn in areas with scattered losses to the gilding.

The canvas is in plane with good tension. The paint layer is in a good condition overall. There appear to be a few small damages at the edges which have been repaired. In some areas the age craquelure is slightly raised but is stable. Localised areas of retouching are well matched to the original. The varnish is slightly yellowed but even with a semi-matte appearance. The frame is in a good condition.
