Circle of Carlo Ceresa (Italian, 1609-1679) Portrait of a noblewoman, wearing a black cap, a necklace and bracelets of pearls and rubies, and wearing a lace-trimmed dress, holding a prayer book oil on canvas, unlined 87 x 72cm (34 x 28in) Provenance: From a Scottish country house and by descent. Other Notes: Carlo Ceresa was born in 1609 at San Giovanni Bianco, a town in the Brembana Valley in the province of Bergamo. He was a pupil, and then assistant, of the Milanese painter Daniele Crespi. He was a skilful portrait painter whose services were sought after by the noble families of the city. Unlined. Bears red wax seal to the reverse. Very dirty. Inventory No. 847 stuck to the right-hand corner.
Circle of Cornelius Johnson (1593-1661) Portrait miniature of a lady, said to be Queen Henrietta Maria wearing a lace trimmed dress and pearl necklace oil on copper, in a later wooden rectangular frame 4½cm (2in) Similar miniatures were painted in France when the Queen was in exile, and distributed in England for propaganda purposes. Condition: Some flaking paint particularly along the edges and around the sitter's face.

A French art nouveau 18ct gold and gemset locket with mirror, of oval outline, swivelling to open, and cast in bas relief with the bust of a girl in profile, her hair piled in a loose bun with escaping tendril curls, her filmy dress revealing one breast, with ribbons and flowers, and set against an open flattened poppy, suggesting sleep - thus a dream - or an opiate-induced fantasy; the girl wearing a rose cut diamond choker, with an emerald in her hair and a ruby-centred flower on her dress; verso plain; with swivelling suspensory loop, stamped twice with oval weevil mark (French 1864-1919), and an oval bale; interior with one side containing a chamfer-edged mirror, the other with a vacant glazed and satin-lined panel; length with bale 5.5cm, gross weight 23.21g

CONDITION REPORT: All medals appear original and in good condition, the Military Cross is unnamed, other medals are all named with the exception of the Defense Medal.

CONDITION REPORT: The shank is worn very thin and the hallmark is likely lost. Rubies have noticeable wear and small chips/frits. Diamonds very dirty. Some inclusions noted particularly in the big stone.

CONDITION REPORT: Some staining and marks to the blade, wear to gilding commensurate with use, braid is also worn and very grubby, scabbard top mount is loose, scuffs and wear to the leather.
