Col. Lord A.R. Innes-Ker D.S.O. below the inscription reading : Presented to Lieutenant W.M. Sale by his brother officers on the occasion of his marriage.The recipient, Brigadier Walter Morley Sale (1903-1976), had a distinguished military career. The son of a diplomat, he was born in Yokohama, Japan. He joined the Royal Horse Guards (Blues) in the early 1920s, being promoted Lieutenant in 1924 and Major in 1938. He married the Hon. Hilda Margaret Islay, the daughter of Lord Southampton, in 1928. Awarded the OBE in 1940 for his services in Palestine, he finally retired from the army as an acting Brigadier in 1945. From 1955 until 1961 he served as an Extra Equerry to HM The Queen, for which he received the CVO.F. Phillips of Wellington Street, Aldershot are recorded between 1890-1963, latterly trading as F. Lucinda Boyd a large poured wax shoulder head doll, probably Meech, English circa 1860, with large inserted blue glass eyes, painted mouth and inserted short light brown hair, on a cloth body with wax lower arms and legs, wearing a white cotton and broderie anglais dress with yellow ribbon, bonnet and underclothes, 26” (66cm) tall, (condition: melting/dents to back of shoulders and arms, small split to front of shoulders, some later tape to upper body), the vendors mother was given this doll in 1978 by her friends the Boyyds of Godalming who had rescued her from a house in Blackheath where she was about to be put on a bonfire.

Rare Lambert Jumeau bisque character head automata of ‘Little Girl with broken doll’, French circa 1890, the finely moulded 211 pale bisque Jumeau head having fixed squinting brown glass eyes, painted lashes and brows, open/closed crying mouth with moulded upper teeth, pierced ears and original brown wig, on a moulded carton body with wire and posed bisque arms, standing on a pink velvet base housing mechanism and start/stop lever and LB key, holding her handkerchief in left hand and dolls head in right with dolls body at her feet, wearing pink silk and lace dress. When wound the girl turns her head, nods and lifts her right arm, she then turns her head and brings other arm up lifting the handkerchief to her crying face, whilst playing a single air, 20” (51cm) tall including base, (condition: in excellent working order, head perfect, restoration to one finger, base recovered). The 200 series bisque automata heads where commissioned exclusively from Jumeau for Lambert and are extremely rare.

(condition: good, small paint mark above left eye).
