Artist: Andy Warhol (American, 1928 - 1987). Title: "The Souper Dress". Medium: Color silkscreen on paper. Date: Composed c1965-1968. Dimensions: Overall size: 38 1/4 x 23 1/8 in. (972 x 587 mm).Lot Note(s): Edition unknown, few survive intact and complete. Printed on paper: 80% cellulose, 20% cotton. The complete dress, untrimmed at bottom. Fine impression. Condition: folds as issued; repaired tear and repairs, lower right, slight yellowing, prior owner's inscriptions and artwork in black marker, verso, top left and right, else good. Framing would mask the imperfections. Literature/catalogue raisonne: Mark Francis, "The Warhol Look: Glamour, Style, Fashion", New York, 1997 (illustration of another example). Comment(s): The dress has sold at auction as high as $23,275 (Phillips New York, March 10, 2007, lot #1218). Our example, unlike many, does not have the bottom hem cut off (the concept was that the bottom of the dress could be cut to fit). The printing date is variously given as 1960 (incorrect), 1965, 1966, and 1968. Apparently, for two soup can labels and $1.00, Campbell's would send you this A-line dress, fire resistant unless washed or cleaned, three sizes available. Exhibited at the Centre Pompidou, Paris. In his art, Wyeth's favorite subjects were the land and people around him, both in his hometown of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and at his summer home in Cushing, Maine. One of the best-known images in 20th-century American art is his painting, "Christina's World," currently in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. [28309-3-225]
A special velvet dress. Topkhana. Bought in Gazni, Afghanistan. An expensive dress like this would be worn by an upper class or city lady. Fits UK size 12. Mid 20th c. Notes: Bought in Gazni and worn by Hazel as a Christmas dress, this Hazara dress is adorned with couched gold thread. This decoration was most likely derived from British officer uniforms from the UK occupation in early 19th c. The velvet is very slightly worn but in excellent condition.
3 very old dress ornaments from Bali. Each 90 x 20cm. Early 20th c. Notes: These would be worn over the shoulder and as a waist sash with a very fine sarong by a young girl dancing the Legong dance. I bought these many years ago in the north of Bali after watching a huge ceremony procession up the steps towards Agung Agung.
