A 19th century ceramic plaque painted with portrait of a young lady in ornate dress wearing gold necklace, unsigned and with indistinct mark verso, diameter 42.5cm, in period ebonised and gilt heightened frame.Additional InformationSome splits to the frame with further rubbing to coloured detail, craquelure to the paint throughout and crazing visible to reverse with general surface wear and dirt. External dimensions of the frame are 62 x 62cm.

GREGOIRE HENRI: (1750-1831) Also known as Abbé Grégoire (“Abbot Gregoire”). French Catholic Priest, Abolitionist and revolutionary Leader, appointed President of the Convention. Rare A.L.S., `Bishop Senator Gregoire´, two pages, 4to, Paris, 28th September 1810, to Sauquaire de Souligné, in French. Greoire states in part `I have expressed my way of thinking as opposed to yours… You have been blessed with distinguished talents, but these talents being a blessing of heaven, they claim a legitimate use of it. Your heart, Monsieur, is may be more religious than what you believe..´ A lengthy letter of good content. With blank address leaf bearing a small area of paper loss as a result of the opening. G £300-400 Gregoire is well remembered for his memorable speech in the first session of the National Convention, 21st September 1792, stating `Kings are in morality what monsters are in the world of nature´. Two months after Gregoire delivered a speech demanding that King Louis XVI be brought to trial and immediately after was elected President of the Convention, over which he presided in his episcopal dress. Abbé Gregoire attempted to save the life of the monarch by proposing that the death penalty should be suspended.
