When his tenure with Reynolds ended in the late 1820s, Lucas established a practice as a painter. He exhibited his first portrait at the Royal Academy in 1828 and thereafter gained fame as a fashionable society portraitist. Lucas often exhibited his works publicly, showing ninety-six portraits at the Royal Academy from 1828 to the time of his death. Among his sitters were Prince Albert and the Duke of Wellington. Redfern supplied four pictures to Sir John in 1852 for a total of £46.Please refer to department for condition report
American School, mid 19th century, Portrait of a girl, seated in a landscape, wearing a blue dress and straw hat, with a dog on her lap; oil on canvas, 76.5 x 63.4 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The tradition of folk art flourished in America in the mid-19th Century, largely practiced by itinerant artists with little formal training. The increasing prospering of the middle classes precipitated a growing demand from rural families to acquire personal keepsakes in painted form, with children becoming the most frequent subjects of such portraits. The composition and the artist’s handling of the present work are particularly reminiscent of works by William Matthew Prior (1806-1873) and Erastus Salisbury Field (1805-1900).Please refer to department for condition report
Eugenio Zampighi, Italian 1859-1944- His favourite tune; oil on canvas, signed 'E. Zamphighi' (upper right), 58 x 44 cm. Provenance: Private Collection. Note: Many of Zampighi’s works can be viewed as highly romanticised depictions of contemporary society, with the artist repeatedly drawn to modest, rustic subjects, often dressed in colourful regional dress. In the present work, for example, the artist appears to be promoting the simple pleasures of the lower classes to the pursuits and excesses more commonly associated with the urban elites. Often conveying a sense of domestic harmony and bliss, in this case emphasised by the artist’s musical subject, his compositions are especially notable for their highly-detailed finish, with every area of this canvas afforded careful study and attention, and in particular the cracked and worn wall which forms the backdrop to the figures. For a similar work by the artist and of comparable dimensions, see Anon. sale, Bonhams, London, 10 November 2021, lot 193.Please refer to department for condition report
