LASCELLES (HENRY, 6TH EARL OF HAREWOOD); typed letter signed "H. Lascelles" to General Sir Miles Dempsey (My Dear Dempsey) at HMS Vanguard, 8.2.1947. Lascelles asks Dempsey for his opinion regarding the Sam Browne belt and sword, and whether these should be retained as standard uniform or abolished. Dempsey's reply is included and is in support of retaining the two, thus upholding high standards of non-battle dress. Notes: Henry George Charles Lascelles, 6th Earl of Harewood, became the son-in-law of King George V and Queen Mary when he married Princess Mary in 1922.
A Victorian basket hilt dress sword and scabbard, the double edged blade finely engraved with foliate sprays beneath Queen Victoria's cipher, unmarked, the pierced hilt decorated throughout with heart shaped motifs, length of blade 82cm. CONDITION REPORT: The scabbard has started to corrode and as such there is some light surface rusting. The blade is in really quite superb condition, no significant nicks. THe decorative is still very crisp. The hilt doesn't appear to be misshapen or missing any parts, just some slight areas of pitting commensurate with age.
