A German etched circular shield of convex form, the outer surface equally divided between six very low segmental ridges radiating from a central conical boss, studded with pairs of rivets for attaching enarmes, and around the border for attaching a lining (some rivets missing, small laminations, cracks and internally patched repairs), the outer surface etched with six panels scrolling tendrils with grotesque mask terminals, inhabited by figures in classical and 16th century dress, exotic birds, and framed within hatched borders 61.2cm; 24 in diameter The style and the execution of the etching is related to a number of morions associated with Nuremburg and dating from the late 16th and early 17th century.
