ARTHUR WILLIAM DEVIS (1762-1822) PORTRAIT OF CAPT. THE HON. HENRY DUNDAS SHORE, 3rd SON OF THE 1ST LORD TEIGNMOUTH (1800-1826) Quarter length, wearing dress uniform, with shoulder belt, boss and prickers, oil on canvas 74.5 x 62cm. Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitter. * The sitter served with the 11th Regiment of (Light) Dragoons as Cornet in 1818, then in the 4th (Royal Irish) Regiment of Dragoon Guards (being promoted to Lieutenant in November 1822) before becoming Captain in the Royal Marines in 1826. He was unmarried. Shore died in Lourmarin, France in April 1826 and his funeral was a grand affair: "The pall was borne by officers of the French army. As the procession passed through the streets, which were densely crowded - as holiday had been granted to the people of the neighbourhood - its progress was indicated by volleys from the carbines of the gendarmerie and the same martial tribute was bestowed at the grave." Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitter until 2016 * The Duke of Cleveland's 1st wife, Lady Catherine Powlett, bore him eight children but died in 1807 aged 41. The Duke then married Elizabeth Russell, daughter of Robert Russell of Newton in Yorkshire, in July 1813 but there was no issue from this union. An undoubted portrait of the Duchess from the circle of John Hoppner is at Raby Castle, Co. Durham. ++ Lined; some scattered retouching; needs a light clean

Sir Hubert Von Herkomer RA, RWS, CVO (British/German, 1849-1914), interior with a woman modelling a medieval style blue dress standing on a tiger skin rug whilst a man peers through curtains beyond, monogram and dated 1877 lower right, watercolour, 45cm by 30cm, gilt frameNotes: Von Herkomer was a painter of social realism, portraits, historical subjects and landscapes. He entered South Kensington School in 1866 where he studied under Sir Luke Fildes and was influenced by F. Walker. His fist great success was with 'The Last Muster, Sunday at The Royal Hospital, Chelsea' in 1875 which was bought for £1200 by the Lady Lever Gallery. Notable works include 'Found' in the Tate Gallery and 'Hard Times' in the Manchester City Art Gallery.
